The Snail That Is Sport Pilot

Before running out for a holiday break, some of the big kahunas at the FAA received a Sport Pilot briefing from EAA officials. EAA President Tom Poberezny and EAA’s Washington Representative Doug Macnair met with Nick Sabatini, FAA associate administrator for regulation and certification, and Tony Fazio, director of the office of rulemaking, at FAA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Monday, Dec. 16, to discuss the ongoing progress of the Sport Pilot/Light Sport Aircraft proposal. Some of the items discussed at the meeting include: the Sport Pilot/Light Sport Aircraft moving forward through the rulemaking progress, the proposal’s eventual handoff to the Department of Transportation and the Office of Management and Budget, and final release of the rule itself. Emphasizing EAA’s eagerness to see things move quickly through the bureaucratic process, Poberezny said, “(Mid-2003) is their goal and they’re on target for that goal.”
