Russian Controllers Satisfy Wage Hunger

How would you feel if you knew the controller working your flight hadn’t eaten in five days? We thought so. That was the strategy behind an innovative (and ultimately successful) job action in Russia last week. On Sunday, controllers in the Siberian city of Omsk stopped eating, but kept showing up for work, to press for a 30-percent wage increase. The idea caught on and soon there were tummies grumbling in towers all over the country. On Wednesday, controllers at the busiest airports got 28.44-percent raises and others got 15.7 percent. We understand that most went to dinner to celebrate. Not so for holdouts in the Siberian city of Surgut — they didn’t pick up their knives and forks until noon the next day. Looking for a 100-percent raise, they were perhaps a little hungrier than their counterparts elsewhere.
