Honeywell, Sensis Develop Cockpit Incursion Alarm

Honeywell and Sensis Corp. say they’ve demonstrated a runway-incursion system that sounds an audible alert in the cockpit. Until now, anti-incursion systems have set off alarms for ground controllers, who then had to relay the alarm to the affected aircraft. The cockpit advisory will ensure that pilots are aware of possible conflicts with the safe operation of their aircraft in the airport vicinity much quicker than current procedures and technology allows, said Rick Berckefeldt, Honeywell’s product marketing manager for Safety and Surveillance Systems, in a news release.

With this system, when the Sensis Airport Surface Detection Equipment Model X (ASDE-X) system detects a potential incursion, it sends a signal through the Mode S data link and a modified TCAS on the airplane. The demonstration was held at Syracuse Hancock Airport. The functionality and performance of this demonstration – which leverages currently deployed systems – proves that the technology exists to help address runway incursions, said Tony Lo Brutto, vice president and general manager of Sensis Air Traffic Systems. The FAA has been part of the development of the system. ASDE-X is active at nine U.S. airports and slated for installation at 35 more.
