Cessna 172, Sabreliner Collide: Four Dead

Four people have been confirmed killed after the midair collision of a Sabreliner business jet and a Cessna 172 near San Diego on Sunday. The FAA told local media both aircraft were trying to land at Brown Field Municipal Airport, about a mile north of the Mexican border. The wreckage came down in an open field near a prison and sparked a series of spot fires, some of which took firefighters two hours to control.

Circumstances of the crash were sketchy on Sunday afternoon but officials suggested the impact was catastrophic. “It appears it was a very violent crash, as you can tell by both aircraft being in multiple pieces,” Cal Fire Division Chief Nick Schuler told the San Diego Union-Tribune. The wreckage of the aircraft was about 100 yards apart. Aside from the fires, nothing was damaged on the ground.
