FAA Issues No-Drone Reminder For Super Bowl

The FAA reminded drone operators on Wednesday that the perennial Super BowlTFR (PDF) applies to them too, not just pilots of manned aircraft. The NOTAM, published earlier this month for Sunday’s Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale, Arizona, includes the standard restrictions of GA operations such as flight training and sightseeing as well as “model aircraft operations, model rocketry … and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).”The FAA last year added drones to its list of aircraft prohibited under TFRs for large sports venues, and law enforcement have detained people caught flying UAVs over stadiums.

“Besides possibly landing a violator in jail, flying an unmanned aircraft over a crowded stadium could result in an FAA civil penalty for ‘careless and reckless’ operation,” the FAA said in its announcement. There’s also a 15-second video with the agency’s “No Drone Zone” logo superimposed on footage of cheering football fans and the gridiron, and no drones make an appearance. The FAA’s proposed rules regulating the use of drones, anticipated in 2014, are still making their way through the rulemaking review process.
