Jet Blue Kids Flight Lands At Sun ‘n Fun

Far out on the fringes of Sun ‘n Fun on Wednesday morning, a Jet Blue A321 taxied up to the edge of the grass, dozens of high-school students exited via a tall set of jet stairs, and an enthusiastic welcome ensued, featuring a marching band, the mayor of Lakeland, show officials and a profusion of cameras. The students had arrived from Orlando, but they originated from 12 schools in New York City, North Dakota, Florida, Alabama and elsewhere. They are part of a project sponsored by Jet Blue to promote education in science, technology, engineering and math, Joanna Geraghty, president of the Jet Blue Foundation, told AVweb. All of the students are involved in an aviation program. The foundation also announced a donation of $25,000 to provide supplies for A&P education programs in Polk County, Fla.

Geraghty said Jet Blue first sponsored the event last year, and it was “a fantastic success.” Jet Blue CEO David Barger “had a vision,” Geraghty said, “that students, education and airplanes should go together.” The students spent the day at Sun ‘n Fun and saw the airshow, and returned home at the end of the day.
