Marine Helicopters Collide In Hawaii, 12 Missing

There is still no sign of survivors of what may have been midair collision between two Marine Corps CH-53 helicopters in Hawaii. Early reports saidthat search teams spotted a fire and debris near the island of Oahu. The transport helicopters, each with six Marines on board, were reported missing around 4 a.m. EST on Friday. The Coast Guard began dispatching search crews and they’ve been searching ever since in difficult conditions.

Thirty-foot seas were reported in the search area over the weekend. Thehelicopters are from Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Hawaii. Hawaii News Now is reporting that a resident heard the helicopters and saw a fireball around 11:40 p.m. local time. “Crews discovered a life raft with no one on board and visible flames on the water,” a Marine Corps petty officer told the news site.
