NTSB: GA Fatalities Up Slightly In 2014

The number of fatal general aviation accidents in the U.S. increased slightly in 2014 to 253, from 222 the previous year, the NTSB said Thursday in its preliminary report of annual statistics. The fatality rate also climbed in 2014, with 1.4 accidents per 100,000 flight hours compared to 1.12 the previous year. Overall, the accident count remained flat in the two-year period, with 1,221 reported in 2014, down from 1,224 in 2013. The accident rate for GA saw an increase, to 6.74 per 100,000 flight hours from 6.26 in 2013, the report said. In 2014, there were an estimated 18.1 million GA flight hours, down from about 19.5 million in 2013.

Part 135 operations had slight decreases in the accident numbers. The number of Part 135 commuter accidents fell last year with four reported in 2014, down from seven the previous year. On-demand Part 135 operations, which include charter, air taxi, air tour and air medical flights, reported 35 accidents, down from 44 in 2013, according to the preliminary numbers. The accident rate dropped to 1.02 per 100,000 hours, from 1.30 in 2013.
