Our weekly review of whats new in aviation found that a replica of the Bugatti 100P air racer is on display, the NTSB issued recommendations regarding lithium batteries, NATA has announced scholarship winners and Disney Planes characters are joining a national wildfire prevention education program. The Mullin Automotive Museum, a Southern California institution devoted to the preservation of French art and automobiles from the Art Deco era, announced that visitors have a limited opportunity to view the recreation of the Bugatti 100P, Ettore Bugatti’s vision for high-speed aircraft racing, at the museum through early July. The National Transportation Safety Board has issued a series of recommendationsrelated to the evaluation and certification of lithium-ion batteries for use in aircraft systems, as well as the certification of new technology. The five safety recommendations, all addressed to the Federal Aviation Administration, are derived from the NTSB’s ongoing investigation of the Jan. 7, 2013, fire event that occurred in a lithium-ion battery on a Boeing 787 that was parked at Boston Logan Airport.

The National Air Transportation Foundation (NATF) announcedthe winners of its annual academic and learn to fly scholarships. Tyler Charles Wilson, a student at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, is the recipient of the Dan L. Meisinger Sr. Memorial Learn to Fly Scholarship. Alovia Kelley Dudek, a student at the Portland Community College in Portland, Ore., is the recipient of the Pioneers of Flight Scholarship. Shane Allan Fisher, a student at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., is the recipient of the 2014 Richard L. Taylor Flight Training Scholarship. Brian James Nissel, a student at the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics at the Hagerstown, Md., campus and an employee of Aero-Smith, Inc. in Martinsburg, W.V., is the recipient of the NATA Business Scholarship. Finally, in an effort to educate Americans about how to prevent accidental wildfires, Disney is joining the Ad Council, the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) to launch a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) featuring scenes and characters from Disneytoon Studios’ upcoming animated film “Planes: Fire & Rescue.” The PSAs are an extension of the Wildfire Prevention PSA campaign, featuring the iconic Smokey Bear, who celebrates his 70th birthday this summer.
