Through the last 100 years or so, pilots have been dreaming up ways to impress with their flying skills and Red Bull Air Race pilot Paul Bonhomme has added a new definition of hangar flying. Last week Bonhomme and his friend Steve Jones flew in formation through a hangar in Wales at about 185 mph. The hangar is about 200 feet wide and 25 feet high so they maintained about six to eight feet in altitude for the second or so they were indoors. They, of course, had all the necessary approvals from U.K. authorities and because it was a Red Bull event there were dozens of cameras recording it.
The duo, who have been flying together for 25 years, did the flight in a pair of Xtreme Air XA41 aerobatic planes and had rehearsed the flight thoroughly. “Ultimately if we get it wrong we hit a building, so pulling up and seeing Steve still there, there was a great sense of relief; but it was really great fun and also slightly bizarre flying through a building with my mate,” Bonhomme said.
