Sporty’s Upgrades Stratus Features

Sporty’s staff introduced several new features in their popular Stratus ADS-B receiver this week at Sun ‘n Fun. The changes are designed to work together with ForeFlight’s newly released version 6.0. A split-screen attitude view, animated radar and a new feature that aims to conserve iPad battery time are all part of the free update for Stratus 2 owners. The battery-saving feature allows pilots to turn off the iPad between uses, and when they re-start, Stratus automatically sends to ForeFlight any ADS-B weather that was missed. The new animated radar will loop the previous 30 minutes of returns when the user hits a “play” button, making it easier to determine weather trends. The Stratus firmware upgrades will be included when pilots update to the new version of ForeFlight.

In other news from Sporty’s, new gadgets were introduced to help pilots who like to shoot video. An adjustable filter that will eliminate the distorted propeller effect, made by NFlight Technologies, can be used on an iPhone or a GoPro camera. Also, a new telephoto lens kit is available for the iPhone 5/5S. Sporty’s also announced they will host a “Rusty Pilots” seminar, together with AOPA, at their headquarters in Batavia, Ohio, on May 29. They also will host the 10th annual Sporty’s Fly-In and open house on May 17. ForeFlight’s Tyson Weihs explained some of the features in the new ForeFlight 6.0 release to AVweb’s Paul Bertorelli earlier this week; click here for the video.
