Aviators headed to Sun ‘n Fun in Lakeland, Florida, this week can expect all the usual … daily airshows, thousands of airplanes to look at, forums and workshops, tents and hangars filled with new technology to buy … but they’ll also find an expanded focus on education and careers. The second-annual career fair is sold out, with 16 companies participating, and the retired 727 that has been on the field for a few years will have a grand opening this week, now converted into a classroom and laboratory for students. Visitors of all ages will find plenty of opportunities to learn new skills, explore aviation history, and try out new avionics.

Visitors also can catch the U.S. debut of the Breitling Jet Team, as well as performances by the USAF Thunderbirds, and a night airshow on Wednesday and Saturday. Piper will debut its new M-class models at the show, and other vendors will have all their latest upgrades and products on display. CEO John “Lites” Leenhouts also announced this week that the Sun ‘n Fun organization is now free of debt, for the first time in 28 years. “There is no end to the energy, creativity and commitment that is found in both staff and volunteers,” Leenhouts said. “We all had a challenging goal and through dedicated effort and staying on our ‘flight path,’ we reached it.”The local forecast for this week shows temperatures reaching 90 by the weekend and a chance of thunderstorms Wednesday through Friday. AVweb staffers are on the field and will be filing daily reports from the show all this week, plus photos, videos, podcasts and blog posts.
