The Weekender: High Speeds and Fly-Ins

0

AVweb’s regular perusal of SocialFlight found enough excitement for any aviation junkie this weekend-from the Reno Air Races through Wings and Wheels events to a breakfast tradition that has been going on since 1938. The National Championship Air Races-the world’s fastest motorsport, bar none-have already started at Reno Stead Airport, Nevada, and will run through Sunday. Racing and airshow acts run all day, each day, with the finals taking place on Sunday. Aircraft classes range from sport biplanes through T-6s/SNJs, L-39 jets and the thundering Unlimiteds that reach speeds as high as 500 MPH. It only happens once a year-and it’s right now. The second annual Wings and Wheels Fly-In, Drive-In and cookout is scheduled for Saturday from noon through ? at Porter County Airport, Valparaiso, Indiana. Organizers promise aviation seminars all afternoon, raffles and games. For those who want to stay after dusk, there will be an aviation-themed movie and free popcorn.

What is billed as Southern New Mexico’s Premier Air and Car Show is back for the sixth time this Saturday, Sept. 13 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Sierra Blanca Regional Airport, Ruidoso, New Mexico. Planes-vintage, classic and warbirds-cars and model railroads will be on display, with the Pine Top Car Club promising more than 100 cars on the ramp. There will be Air Force static displays and flyovers throughout the day, including an F-22 Raptor flypast. The Longhorn Dance band will be performing in the evening. Finally, the South Carolina breakfast club continues its tradition of an airport gathering for breakfast every other Sunday since 1938. This Sunday, Sept. 14, join them at Berkeley County Airport, Moncks Corner, South Carolina, for what is billed as a home-cooked breakfast, great fellowship and flying. Breakfast costs between $6 and $10 per plate and is ready about 9:00 a.m. Pilot or non-pilot, everyone is welcome. Our thanks to SocialFlight for keeping aviators up to date on aviation events around the world.
