New thunderstorm warning technology will be installed at 11 airports in the U.S., Canada and Thailand by the end of the year. The TWX 300 by Vaisala is a third generation detection system and is designed to warn airports and other vulnerable facilities of pending storm activity. The system gathers information from lightning detection equipment and combines it with on-site electrical field measurements to qualify and quantify the threat of a storm. If it decides there's a good chance that a thunderstorm will hit the designated target area, it presents visual alarms and will even send out an email. It also lets users know when the storm has safely passed. The gear is also being used in research projects in Tucson and Dallas/Fort Worth to study the effects of lightning on ground operations.
