TransAsia ATR-72 Crashes In Taiwan (Video)

The crew of the TransAsia Airways ATR-72 that crashed into a river near Taipei on Tuesday reportedly transmitted “Mayday, mayday, engine flameout,” according to a BBC report, but officials did not immediately verify the communications with ATC. Whatappears to be adashcam videoposted by SkyNet shows the turboprop striking a bridge in a near 90-degree left bank before plunging into the Keelung River.Controllers lost radio contact at 10:55 a.m. local time (9:55 p.m. ET on Tuesday), about two minutes after departure, the BBC reported.

The flight, carrying 58 passengers, had just taken off from Taipei Songshan Airport in Taiwan’s capital for the Kinmen islands off the coast of Xiamen in southeastern China. At least 31 people died in the crash andrescue crews continued working in the river Wednesday night, lifting the fuselage with a crane. Fifteensurvivors were rescued so far and 12 people remain missing, the BBC reported.The Taipei-based TransAsia line suffered an earlier crash in July, when another ATR-72 crashed in Penghu, killing 48 people. That crash is still under investigation.
