At least 11 people are feared dead a Hawker Hunter plowed into multiple cars, including a wedding limousine, on a road adjacent to an airport hosting an airshow in the U.K. Saturday. The pilot, identified as Andy Hill, a British Airways pilot and former RAF Harrier pilot, survived and is in the hospital in serious condition after the crash near the Shoreham Airport near the southern city of Brighton. At least 15 others were hurt and were treated at the scene. Officials say the casualty total may rise as they search the wreckage. The crash occurred as the aircraft attempted to pull out of a loop and a large explosion engulfed the nearby cars on the road. The crash occurred about 1:20 p.m. The balance of the show was cancelled and Sunday’s show has also been cancelled.
The crash aircraft is owned by Graham Peacock, according to the Shoreham Airshow website, and has been a regular feature of airshows throughout the U.K. for years under various owners. It was built in 1955 and served the RAF until 1996. The Air Accidents Investigations Branch has investigators on the scene and the A27 highway remains closed.
