Video Shows Steep Descent, Fireball In Russian Crash

In a video clip (below) broadcast by Russian TV on Monday, the 737 that crashed on Friday appears to descend quickly at a near-vertical angle to the runway, exploding into a fireball on impact. All 44 passengers and 6 crew died in the crash. The airplane was flying in from Moscow, about 500 miles away, and had made one attempt to land before going around, according to local authorities. It’s not clear why the first attempt was unsuccessful, and weather doesn’t seem to have been a factor. A controller at the airport said the crew told him they weren’t ready to land, as the airplane was approaching, but they didn’t specify any problem.

The video, which was taken from an airport surveillance camera, appears to show a small explosion in the aircraft before it hits the ground, but it’s not very clear. Investigators have said they will be looking for either a technical issue or pilot error to explain the accident. The flight data and cockpit voice recorders have been recovered and are on their way to Moscow for analysis. Investigators from the NTSB are on their way to Moscow, according to Tass.
