AVweb’s search of aviation news this week found milestones from high school and college students, a recent maintenance competition, and new research on “millennial pilots.” The Flying Musicians Association announced that its first FMA Solo Scholarship Award recipient, Drew Medina of Vero Beach, Florida, a senior in the Vero Beach High School Jazz, Symphonic, and Marching Bands under the direction of James M. Sammons, has achieved his goal of successfully completing his first solo flight. The flight program at Parkland College in Illinois reported on its recent successes not long after coming back to life. Closed down by the very large University of Illinois, the program was subsequently picked up by Parkland. Now, the college’s flight team has gained attention for its recent successes in the SAFECON competition.

For the second straight year, a select group of top aviation technicians emerged from the 2015 Midwest Aviation Invitational held on Oct. 16. Hosted by Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) at its campus adjacent to the Ottumwa Regional Airport, this event – comprised of 29 competitors – was open to industry personnel, including professional technicians and repairmen, students, and military service members with a focus on aviation maintenance.Brown Aviation Lease published new research this week detailing how the skills an aviator receives through the experience of flight training have value far beyond the cockpit.
