We received over 800 responses to our question last week on annual inspections. Just over half (51 percent) of our respondents felt the annual inspection requirement for certificated, non-commercial aircraft needs to be revised. Only 6 percent felt that hours an aircraft is flown only (e.g., every 100 hours) should be the primary basis for determining when a certificated, non-commercial aircraft should be inspected. On the other hand, 47 percent claimed the hours flown and calendar time (e.g., every 100 hours or biennial) should be the main determining factor. Regardless of what system should be implemented, several comments we received hailed the owner/operator as the key in this situation. As one person wrote, "Learn to know your airplane inside and out, don't rely on your mechanic to find everything."
