The Weekender: Barbecue And Thunderbirds

0

Fall is a wonderful time of year to get out and explore the country in your airplane, and this weekend offers some great places to go, courtesy of SocialFlight‘s free online website and app. The 20th annual fly-in in Bennettsville, South Carolina, combines two of our favorite fly-in features — barbecue, and the chance to visit an uncharted grass field. The 2,300-foot turf runway is sited just across the street from Stanton’s Barbeque and Fish Camp Fly-In Restaurant; the event is planned for Saturday. For a noisier experience, pilots can fly in to catch the USAF Thunderbirds, Saturday or Sunday, at the Amigo Airshow held at Dona Ana County International Jetport in Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

Also this weekend, on the West Coast, the first Flying Aviation Expo will be held in Palm Springs, California. Pilots will find a full agenda of more than 50 educational seminars and workshops, a Parade of Planes, about 130 exhibitors in the convention center, and a roster of social events. Brian Shul, a former Blackbird SR-71 pilot, will provide the keynote address on Saturday morning. SocialFlight lists a wide variety of events all over the country and the world, along with listings for restaurants and hotels close by any airport you might visit.
