The Weekender: Camping, Competitions and BBQ

0

The Weekender is packing tents, sleeping bags and plenty of provisions for some backcountry events found on SocialFlight. Starting Friday, Blue Mountain Air Park in Lafayette, Georgia, will host its annual spring fly-in at the Gibson Field private grass strip. Primitive camping is open Friday and Saturday nights for pilots, with evening bonfires and grills to cook on. Enjoy a gourmet breakfast, barbecue lunch, and possibly some local bluegrass pickin’. Another long camping weekend awaits in Arizona at the Backcountry Camping and Cookout in Payson. Bring your gear plus a side dish to the campground, which has hot showers and a restaurant on the field. Kudos to James Nebrig, 13, who built the new pilot shelter for his Eagle Scout project.

Another three-day weekend event is the Virginia Beach Airshow, the annual gathering of war re-enactors and their aircraft, featuring the Lancaster Bomber and a rare de Havilland Mosquito. If you’re looking for a competition to watch or take part in, the Pocono Mountains Flying Club in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, will hold its annual Precision Air Drop Competition and BBQ on Saturday. Competitors are limited to 20; check out entry fees and rules on the club’s website. Everyone else is welcome to enjoy the gathering. Rain date will be on Sunday.
