The Weekender: Color Touring and Poker Runs

0

It’s getting to be that time of year-the leaf-peeping flights are beginning in the far north and the high country, as are associated fly-ins and poker runs. Thanks to SocialFlight, we found out about the first of the fall color fly-ins, two poker runs and a fly-in dedicated to the “Grasshoppers” of World War II. There will be a Fall Colors Fly-In at the Telluride, Colorado Airport on Sunday, September 28 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The bright yellow colors of the Aspens should be just at peak in the central Rockies this weekend, and the organizers are welcoming all visitors with $4.00 per gallon 100LL fuel and a free hamburger lunch. The Fall Thumb Poker Run will be taking place at the Dupont-Lapeer Airport, Lapeer, Michigan this Saturday, starting at 9:00 am. A poker run involves flying to a series of airports where each pilot picks up a playing card-upon return to home plate, the pilot with the best poker hand wins. Being Michigan, where people use their hands to describe the shape of the state, the “thumb” is the northeastern portion of the lower peninsula-and where the poker run will take place. Lapeer Aviation is offering activities for the entire family at the Lapeer Airport, including food, music, a photo booth, airplane rides and more-even if you don’t participate in the poker run.

Promising a wide variety of activities all day Saturday, and camping Friday and Saturday night, the Grignon’s “Fall-ow Me” Fly-In is taking place on the Grignons Private Landing Area (check SocialFlight for contact information and check in with Sam before going) near Wet Pittsfield, Maine. The “Fall-ow Me” is an all-day, fly-in, fly-out event that will include a poker run, bonfires, s’mores, hayrides, face painting and possibly hot air balloon rides. The First Annual Grasshopper Fly-In is being held this Friday from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at Beauregard Regional Airport, DeRidder, Louisiana. It’s a part of the First Annual Commeration of the 1941 Louisiana Maneuvers of the U.S. Army that proved critical to the success of the American involvement in World War II-and which included the first serious use of small liaison airplanes in the field-Aeroncas, Pipers, Stinsons and others-later referred to as Grasshoppers. The event will include a 1940s hangar dance, military vehicle pass in review, vintage aircraft, historical reenactments and weapons demonstrations. Airfield camping will be available. Thank you to SocialFlight for keeping us up to date on aviation events throughout the world.
