The Weekender: Runway Run, Island Airport

0

The Weekender will have a hard time choosing what state to fly to, with SocialFlight offering some unique outings. On Saturday, experience the fun of landing on a well-maintained 2,600-foot turf runway that runs along an island on the Mississippi. This Iowa gem will be open to pilots and their guests for the 15th Annual Abel Island Fly-In, Float-In, Potluck and BBQ. Floatplane pilots can land right on the river. Bring your own meat to grill, a covered dish, table settings and drinks. Weather criteria will apply; rain date is Sunday. For those looking for a fun-filled day in Oregon, the Eugene Airport Fly-In on Saturday will feature a 5K on the Runway event — the straightest, flattest, fastest course you’ll likely find anywhere. The day also includes a pancake breakfast, Young Eagles flights, aircraft displays, live music and a beer garden.

Portland Municipal in Indiana will host a pancake and sausage breakfast plus airplane rides for its 5th Annual Fly-In on Saturday, held in conjunction with the 50th Tri-State Antique Tractor and Engine Show. See more than 4,000 tractors on display. A shuttle will offer rides back and forth between the show and the airport. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, EAA Chapter 179 will host its 25th Land of Enchantment Fly-In Saturday. The event includes aircraft judging, aviation exhibit hall, WINGS seminars, kids activities, displays, a pancake breakfast and burger lunch. Fly-in pilots get a free meal.
