The Weekender: Summer Means Barbecue

No pilot need go hungry this weekend, as our weekly review of the hundreds of events listed on SocialFlight found a barbecue theme at airport fly-ins around the country. The Cortland County Airport, in Cortland, N.Y., invites pilots to fly in or drive to Saturday’s AirFest, offering breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m., an FAA Wings seminar at 10, and a barbecue lunch from noon to 4 p.m. Unique and vintage aircraft, along with helicopters, will be on display, and rides will be available. Also on Saturday, Festus Memorial Airport, in Crystal City, Mo., offers a three-county-wide barbecue championship competition, a beer garden, car show, skydiving, airplane rides and music, from 10 to 3.

The Branson Jet Center, at Taney County Airport in Hollister, Mo., also has listed a barbecue fly-in on Saturday. And on the West Coast, the Fullerton Pilots Association and the AFI Flight Training Center are hosting a barbecue on Saturday along with a spot-landing contest, fuel discounts and airplane displays. SocialFlight’s website, recently upgraded to version 4, graphically maps over 15,000 aviation events around the U.S., including fly-ins, airshows, pancake breakfasts, conventions, FAA safety seminars, and more. The new version also maps 100,000 points of interest within walking distance of airports. A free app is available for both Apple and Android devices.
