One nice thing about many older airplanes, such the Aeronca 7AC Champ or J-3 Cub, is the lack of an electrical system, which means you'll never have a dead battery. Downside: It must be started by hand, meaning hand-propped. The FARs do not specifically cover hand-propping, but the FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook recommends that this never be accomplished alone, and that one person directs all activity and is in charge of the procedure.
