Question of the Week
What are your thoughts on the big jets race and Boeing's new 7E7?
I'm afraid this "launch" of the 7E7 — with just 50 orders (as opposed to a more usual higher count), likely with a deep discount — is less indicative of a company on the rebound than it is of a company hoping to appear that it's on the rebound.
The 7E7 promises improved performance through improved efficiency.
The idea behind this jet, whether or not it's successful, proves that Boeing is still a leader and innovator in the big commercial jet game.
Boeing is playing catch-up to Airbus — and losing. The order and delivery numbers all say that the days of Boeing dominance are over.
The high initial investment costs associated with developing and marketing a brand-new design, plus the relative low amount of efficiency to be gained from that new-design Airbus will be able to undercut Boeing. Carriers will be hard pressed to turn down Airbus's lower-priced and mechanically consistent aircraft (fewer unique maintenance practices) even if Boeing's promises slightly more efficiency.
