Question of the Week

A debate in Canada is raging about mandatory equipage with 406 ELTs, and the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association says it's not only expensive, it's outdated technology that doesn't work much of the time. We know where COPA stands, but what do you think?

Should ELTs be mandatory at all?

Absolutely. Many people have been saved with ELTs, and they are an important safeguard.
They're better than nothing, but they should be improved to be more reliable.
There are new technologies that work better, but ELTs should still be required as backup.
More reliable systems should be developed and ELTS scrapped.
It should be up to the pilot to decide whether to have any kind of search-and-rescue aid on board.
OTHER (My opinion doesn't appear as a choice.)
