Interactive Quiz #119:
Those Who Can -- Teach

As a pilot racks up aerial experience, thoughts turn to passing along that largess. Let the quest for the flight instructor's ticket begin. And, there will be a quiz. All FAR questions, here, are based on Part 61.

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the questions as best you can, then click on the "Score my quiz answers" button to see your score and read the explanations. If you don't like your score the first time around, you can change some of your answers and resubmit. To get the most out of this quiz, we suggest you keep trying until you get a perfect score.

NOTE: When more than one answer is true, only the most complete, correct answer will be scored as correct. The answers are assumed to apply within the United States unless otherwise noted.

1. Wanna score big on the dating scene? (That's not the quiz question.) Simply mention to your prom date that you're a flight instructor, and when he says, "Ah, what?" dump him for the nerdy guy in the corner, because that one will become the high-tech billionaire who supports your aviation career. What is the minimum age to exercise the honors and privileges of an authorized flight instructor (airplane)?
a. 14
b. 16
c. 17
d. 18
e. 23
2. Flight instruction involves more than demonstrating your flying skills to a bewildered student. The CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) guides a stranger through a strange place above the planet; what the student learns depends on how you teach and how you define learning. What is the FAA's definition of learning? (From the Aviation Instructor's Handbook, 8083-9.)
a. A change in attitude as a result of experience
b. A successful transfer of knowledge
c. A change in behavior as a result of experience
d. The successful completion of practical tests standards (PTS) tasks.
3. Despite their appearance after a long summer day in the traffic pattern with students who refuse to roll aileron into the crosswind, flight instructors should be medically sound to instruct. At minimum, in order for an instructor to give flight instruction (VFR, no hood work) to a private pilot, what type medical certificate shall the instructor possess? Note: The private pilot is PIC for this flight.
a. Class I
b. Class II
c. Class III
d. None
e. Current driver's license
4. A CFI routinely signs a pilot's logbook after giving flight training. It's required. Contrary to commonly held beliefs, the penmanship is not required to be illegible. FAR 61.189 does require that the CFI also retain a separate record of:
a. Flight reviews given, including instrument proficiency checks
b. Students endorsed for solo
c. Persons endorsed for knowledge or practical test
d. All of the above
e. b and c only
5. How long shall the CFI in the previous question retain those records?
a. 1 year
b. 3 years
c. Indefinitely
d. Until the student successfully completes a check ride or subsequent flight review
e. Until the FAA Administrator, Marion Blakey, earns a pilot certificate
6. Certificates and ratings issued under FAR Part 61.5 include pilot certificates. A CFI certificate is a pilot certificate with appropriate category and class ratings. For example: in the aircraft category rating, airplane is placed on the certificate with an airplane class rating such as single-engine.
a. True
b. False
7. Most pilots don't carry their pilot logbooks in the airplane. Some do. Which pilots are required to carry their pilot logbooks when exercising the privileges of the certificate?
a. Student pilot on solo cross-country flights
b. Sport pilot on all flights
c. A CFI with a sport pilot rating (when instructing)
d. All of the above
8. You're a CFI who's pounded around the traffic pattern for weeks with a particularly, er ... um ... challenging ... student: "Flair, flair, flair!" Whumph! "That was better; let's go again ..." On the next approach the student pilot suddenly, and miraculously, gets it. "Wow, Mr. Azzetti!" you shout, barely containing your surprise. "That was a good landing! Quick, pull over and let me out." Time to solo. And, more importantly, time to figure out how to tell your student to log solo time. A student pilot (airplane) should log solo time as PIC.
a. True
b. False
9. A CFI who wishes to train a first-time flight instructor applicant, not in an FAA-approved course, must have been a certified flight instructor for at least (_____) months. Please fill in the blank.
a. 12
b. 18
c. 24
d. 36
e. No minimum
10. Somewhere in your CFI training (airplane, glider), or possibly on the checkride, you'll be asked to demonstrate spin competence. This includes which of the following? (Choose the answer that sound closest to the actual FAR 61.183.)
a. Stall awareness, spin entry, spins, and spin recovery procedures
b. Stall entry, spin entry, spin recognition, and explain spin recovery procedure
c. Stall awareness, spin entry, spin awareness, and explain spin recovery procedure
d. Stall theory, spin entry, spins, and spin recovery procedure
e. Stall, spin, scream, puke
