HORSEPOWER V-12 TURBO DIESEL ENGINE FROM GERMANY Raikhlin
Aircraft Engine Developments (RED) has developed a V-12 diesel for large
singles, twins and whatever else can use 500 horsepower of takeoff power
and 15.5 gallons an hour at cruise. In a
podcast interview at AirVenture Oshkosh, a company spokesman said
visitors to the booth tucked over by the vintage area suggested all
kinds of applications for the innovative geared (1.88) mill. Among the
innovations is a dual redundant cam and valve setup on each bank of
cylinders. Weight might be an issue in some applications, however. With
all accessories it tops out at about 800 pounds, but Wadsworth said the
company is banking on the fact that the "competitive" price of $170,000
and fuel efficiency will make it attractive for even light turbine
conversions. Wadsworth said he expects a TBO of 2,000 to 3,000 hours
after the initial 1,000-hour maximum imposed by EASA on new designs
expires for this engine. The engine is being field tested in a Yak-52
with positive results and there's another engine on the drawing board
that might quell some of the concerns over the demise of 100LL and the
fate of the high-performance GA engines that need it. More...

REMAINS
RECOVERED FROM SECOND WORLD WAR WRECK The remains of up to
five U.S. airmen lost when their PBY Catalina sunk in Quebec's Gulf of
St. Lawrence in 1942 have been recovered and sent for DNA
identification. For the last three weeks the Joint POW/MIA Accounting
Command (JPAC)'s USNS Grapple has been on station off
Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan, a small fishing village on Quebec's north
shore. Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan was a stop on the so-called "Crimson
Line" supply route to Europe during the war. That's where Parks Canada
employees found the Catalina intact in 2009. Because the hull was intact
and there might be human remains inside, the workers left the relic
alone and called U.S. officials. The recovery effort has been
successful. "To be able to do this and bring some closure to families is
pretty rewarding," Stefan Claesson, a forensic archaeologist aboard the
Grapple told reporters. "As long as we find one remain it's a success
for us. And in this case we have a significant number of remains to
bring back home, so that's very exciting." Also remarkable is that 70
years later there are still eyewitnesses to the crash living in the
town. More...

COMAIR
TO CEASE OPERATIONS Regional airline Comair will be closed
down in September, its parent company, Delta, said on Friday. Comair
operates about 50 regional jets on 290 routes. Ryan Gumm, president of
Comair, said in a letter to employees that the company operates "some of
the oldest 50-seat aircraft in the Delta Connection fleet, which also
have the highest unit cost per flight hour." He said Comair couldn't
continue to be sustainable given "the economic limitations of our aging
aircraft, cost structure, the long-term outlook for 50-seat aircraft,
and our challenging industry and economy." All 1,700 Comair employees
will lose their jobs. More...

BILL OF RIGHTS ON OBAMA'S DESK A bill introduced by Senator
James Inhofe, who in October 2010 landed
on a closed runway, scattering workers, will now allow pilots easier
access to evidence against them if faced with disciplinary action by the
FAA -- if President Obama signs it. The bill has passed both the House
and Senate and awaits the president's attention and official signature.
"If a person is going to be accused of something," Inhofe told the
Washington Post, "he has to know what he's being accused of." In
Inhofe's case, the accusation may have seemed clear to the workers who
said they watched the Senator's Cessna 340 as it "hopscotched" over them
while landing. But Inhofe, who ultimately received a remedial training
order from the FAA, found flaws in the system. AOPA, EAA, and
Harrison Ford (the actor is a pilot and general aviation advocate) stand
behind the bill. More...

FBO
OF THE WEEK: SIGNATURE FLIGHT SERVICE (KOMA, OMAHA,
NEBRASKA)
AVweb's "FBO of the Week" ribbon goes to Signature Flight Service at Eppley Field
(KOMA) in Omaha, Nebraska. This Signature location earned the
respect (and praise) of AVweb reader Charlie Bobbish when
he needed a helping hand on a recent trip: Being far from home with a mechanical
problem is something no owner looks forward to experiencing. Having it
happen on vacation is even worse. We had to stop in Omaha due to engine
roughness. With no notice, Signature dedicated a mechanic to us,
diagnosed the problem, and got us on our way with a smile. They offered
us a crew car all day and made sure that our stop was as pleasant as
possible. What a great way to treat a customer in
need! Keep those nominations
coming. For complete contest rules, click
here. AVweb is actively seeking out the best FBOs in
the country and another one, submitted by you, will be spotlighted here
next Monday! More...

SHORT
FINAL
Several years ago, as the volume of traffic was
increasing at BNA, an American Eagle flight received and acknowledged an
incorrect altimeter setting. After mentioning it to ground control, he
added: "Well, up-periscope and taxi to the ramp!"
