BULL STRATOS JUMP BREAKS LONGSTANDING RECORDS
When skydiver Felix
Baumgartner stepped from his space capsule on Sunday from 128,000 feet,
he broke two records that stood for more than 50 years and he also kept
a promise to himself. "The only thing you want is you want to come back
alive because you don't want to die in front of your parents, your
girlfriend," he told reporters a few hours after he parachuted to a
seemingly effortless stand-up landing in New Mexico Sunday. His was the
highest-ever parachute jump and the highest manned balloon flight.
Baumgartner is reported to have reached Mach 1.24 during freefall, which
made it the fastest freefall. At four minutes and 18 seconds it was not
the longest-duration freefall. That record still belongs to Col. Joe
Kittinger, who waited until 4:30 to pull the chute on his 1960 jump.
Baumgartner's successful jump took place exactly 65 years, to the day,
after Chuck Yeager first broke the speed of sound in the rocket-powered
X1. Like Yeager's flight, Baumgartner's jump had its potentially
dangerous moments. More...

EU
PONDERS FAA-STYLE SUPER AGENCY The European Union is
considering creating a single FAA-style agency to oversee aviation
regulation and enforcement for all member countries. The current
European Aviation Safety Agency is charged with many of those duties but
individual countries have retained domestic aviation oversight and have
opted out of some initiatives, slowing progress toward a homogenous
system of rules and regulations for all EU countries. A consultation
process has begun to determine the shape and scope of such an
organization. The fundamental question is whether it should operate
independently of EASA or whether EASA should be granted the additional
powers to become the new agency. More...

HUERTA
WANTS CERTIFICATION TIME HALVED FAA Acting Administrator
Michael Huerta says one of the FAA's short-term goals is to cut the cost
of aircraft certification in half while increasing safety. Huerta spoke
to the Wichita Aero Club Thursday while on his way to AOPA Summit in
Palm Springs. According to the Wichita Eagle, Huerta said the FAA wants to
standardize certification testing around the world to streamline the
process for manufacturers. He said it would cut the costs and time spent
on developing new products while maintaining the current system of
oversight. Huerta said the FAA also wants to make it easier for owners
of older aircraft to upgrade, especially where safety systems are
concerned. More...

AOPA
FLYING CLUB PLANS UPDATED There are almost as many pilots
with lapsed certificates in the U.S. as there are active pilots, and
AOPA sees its new flying club initiative as a way to bring some of them
back into the fold. At an information session at AOPA Summit in Palm
Springs on Friday, Adam Smith, head of AOPA's new Center to Advance the
Pilot Community, said there are about 500,000 pilots with lapsed
certificates in the U.S. He said the formation of a flying club in their
area is sometimes the push they need to get back in the cockpit.
"Wherever there is a community in aviation there is a 'stickiness' that
keeps people sticking around," Smith said. To that end, AOPA hopes to
encourage the creation of more than 400 flying clubs in the next five
years. More...

FBO
OF THE WEEK: MEMPHIS/SHELBY COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY (M01, MEMPHIS,
TN)
AVweb's "FBO of the Week" ribbon goes to the Memphis/Shelby County
Airport Authority (MSCAA) FBO at General Dewitt Spain Airport
(M01) in Memphis, Tennessee. AVweb reader Scott
Bartley had high praise for the facility: By far the best FBO I have flown into in the
past three years. They met the plane with a golf cart and offered to
assist. They looked over my plane (Mooney M20C, '65) and noticed a minor
problem in the front tire, which they repaired without any charge. Fuel
is cheap. The helped me get a cab and gave me recommendations of places
to eat during my stay. These people were friendly and just great
overall. Keep those nominations
coming. For complete contest rules, click
here. AVweb is actively seeking out the best FBOs in
the country and another one, submitted by you, will be spotlighted here
next Monday! More...

SHORT
FINAL
This was my experience, airborne near Hollister
(CA) inbound to Salinas (CA) airport,
SNS: Me: "Oakland Flight Watch, Aircoupe 1234, ten
east of Hollister. Please give me current Salinas
weather." OAK: "Aircoupe 1234, Oakland Flight Watch.
What's the identifier?" Me: "Salinas identifier is
SNS." OAK: "I know what the identifier for Salinas is.
I need the identifier for your location near
Hollister." Me: "I don't know the identifier for
Hollister. Just please give me the weather at
Salinas." OAK: "The computer won't let me give you the
Salinas weather unless I tell it where you are with an
identifier." Me: "Disregard my request. I'll call on my
cell phone. It doesn't care where I'm at!"
