U.S.
PILOTS CONVICTED IN BRAZIL The two pilots who were flying an
Embraer Legacy 600 jet that collided with a Boeing 737 at 37,000 feet
above the Amazon jungle in 2006 were convicted of negligence in a
Brazilian court late on Monday. The judge said the pilots, Joseph Lepore
and Jan Paul Paladino, failed to adequately check that their transponder
was working. Federal judge Merilo Mendes gave them a four-year sentence,
but then suspended it and instead required them to do four years of
community service in the U.S., where they have been since shortly after
the accident. The two pilots testified during the trial via video link.
Mendes also suspended their pilot certificates for four years. It's not
clear whether those suspensions can be enforced. More...

EBACE
UNDER WAY The European Business Aviation Convention and
Exhibition (EBACE) got off to a brisk start on Tuesday with a reported
attendance of 12,192. The event is one of the most important business
aviation meetings in the world and the theme of this show appears to be
the shape and form of the forthcoming recovery of the sector. Among the
suggestions at one of the discussion groups was a greater engagement of
politicians to try to prevent a relapse of the kind of backlash that
blindsided the industry when auto executives were called out for using
private aviation to travel to Washington, D.C., to ask for government
bailouts for their companies. On the other hand, there's no shortage of
luxury on display at the event, which draws a hefty percentage of it
attendees from the ranks of the ultra-rich. More...

There's Nothing Light About
This Jet
Meet the latest and greatest member of the world's most successful
family of light jets, the Citation CJ4. It delivers more
speed and greater range while retaining the pilot-friendly and
single-pilot-certified operations of the CJ family. The CJ4's
cabin is larger, more comfortable, and outfitted with new entertainment
and communication systems. All this equals an aircraft that is flexible
enough to meet the requirements of many mid-sized aircraft at light jet
costs, plus the service reputation of Cessna to back up your decision.
It's what every light jet aspires to be.

LIGHTSQUARED
GPS INTERFERENCE REPORTED Early field tests of the effects of
LightSquared's 4G signal on GPS-dependent devices showed some disruption
of service when tested by first responders in New Mexico. In a letter to
federal officials (PDF) last week, Bill Range, the program director for
New Mexico's 911 system, says the tests run by police and emergency
medical services personnel from two counties "substantiate concerns that
the LightSquared network will cause interference to GPS signals and
jeopardize 911 and public safety nationwide." In the tests, first
responders reported inaccuracies and failures with GPS equipment in
proximity to the LightSquared towers that persisted even after the 4G
signal was turned off. As
we reported Monday, LightSquared began live tests from a transmitter
in the Nevada desert near Boulder City. More...

EUROCOPTER
HYBRID HITS 232 KNOTS
Eurocopter has
conducted full-power tests of its hybrid helicopter design and says the
X3 maintained 232 knots TAS in straight and level flight for "several
minutes" on May 12. The aircraft, with twin outboard propellers
augmenting the conventional rotor, first flew last fall but didn't have
the final-design transmission on board and was restricted to 180 knots.
With all the right gears in place, the aircraft actually beat the target
top speed of 220 knots and the test pilot said it provoked no grey
hairs. "We were impressed by the ease at which this speed objective was
attained," said test pilot Herve Jammayrac. The X3 is intended to grow
into a family of aircraft that offer conventional aircraft speed with
helicopter versatility. Sikorsky also has a hybrid called the X2 and
it's been recognized with aviation's most coveted award.

"JETMAN" ROSSY CONQUERS CANYON
Yves
Rossy, the Swiss pilot known as "Jetman" for flying a unique
jet-propelled wing attached to his back, has successfully flown above
the Grand Canyon, after canceling a scheduled attempt last Friday. The
flight occurred in Nevada over the weekend, sponsor Breitling announced on Tuesday. "My first flight in the U.S.
is sure to be one of the most memorable experiences in my life, not only
for the sheer beauty of the Grand Canyon but the honor to fly in sacred
Native American lands," Rossy said in a news release. "Thank you Mother
Nature and the Hualapai Tribe for making my lifelong dreams come true."
Rossy launched from a helicopter at 8,000 feet above the canyon, and
steering only by movement of his body, flew at speeds up to 190 mph for
more than eight minutes at altitudes as low as 200 feet above the canyon
rim. He then deployed a parachute and landed safely on the canyon floor.
