GARMIN
PILOT MYCAST NOW FOR IPHONE Garmin's Pilot MyCast has allowed
pilots to gather flight planning information and even file flight plans
from their cell phones for years, but it hasn't been available for
iPhones until now. Garmin made the announcement at EAA AirVenture 2009
and AVweb's Paul Bertorelli spoke with Garmin's Jessica
Myers about it.

AIRVENTURE 2009 PODCAST SERIES: NEW LIFE FOR PIPER Piper
Aircraft has been through tough times in the last few decades, and a
series of owners have, for better or worse, left their stamp on the
company. There are, however, high hopes for the latest owner
Imprimis. Backed by the very wealthy government of Brunei, the company
says it intends to make Piper a major player in general aviation,
especially in Asia. AVweb's Russ Niles spoke with Imprimis
Managing Director Steve Berger about his plans.

AIRVENTURE 2009 PODCAST SERIES: FLYING FOR GOOD LINDY
KIRKLAND One of the themes of this year's AirVenture show is
public-benefit flying, and as president of the Air Care Alliance,
Lindy Kirkland is working to bring pilots together with
opportunities to serve the greater good. He took a break from setting up
the Fly4Life exhibit at AirVenture on Sunday afternoon to sit down with
AVweb's Mary Grady and talk about the importance of
public-benefit flying, and explain how easy and rewarding
it is for any pilot to get involved.

AIRVENTURE 2009 PODCAST SERIES: GARMIN'S NEW GAD43 Owners who
equip their aircraft with Garmin's G600 glass panel have been sometimes
surprised to learn they still need to retain their old iron gyros to
give the autopilot attitude pickoff information. Garmin has addressed
this with a new product called the GAD43, which allows the G600's
digital attitude information to talk directly to autopilots. In this
podcast, Garmin's Jim Alpiser explains how it
works.

AIRVENTURE 2009 PODCAST SERIES: SATELLITE TRACKING GOES (PRETTY MUCH)
REAL-TIME WITH SPIDERTRACKS GPS technology has improved life
for pilots and their friends on the ground over the last decade. Now New
Zealand company Spidertracks (booth 3062 at AirVenture) is leveraging
the power of the Iridium satellite network to service pilots and their
ground-bound friends in all sorts of interesting ways by logging
their flight paths and allowing anyone to check their location and
progress online. Engineering director James McCarthy gave us the
lowdown at Oshkosh.

AIRVENTURE 2009 PODCAST SERIES: EXPERIMENTAL GLASS Dynon
Avionics has become a popular single-unit EFIS solution for light sport
and experimental aircraft. The company has grown to include engine
management systems and autopilots. Now, with synthetic vision just a few
months away, Dynon's Mike Schofield says affordable
highway-in-the-sky moving maps and weather are in the queue. If you fly
certified aircraft only, this is what you're missing.

KINDLE
DX FOR APPROACH PLATES
Amazon's Kindle e-reader has proven to be a hot
seller, so it was just a matter of time before someone adapted it for
displaying approach plates. The Kindle and Kindle 2 are too small for
this purpose, so Gold Seal Ventures has adapted the new Kindle DX, which
is much larger and has a greater grayscale range than the early
e-readers did. Gold Seal is formally launching the Kindle DX at
AirVenture this week, with demos and improvements on its web site, AirBrief.com.

AIRBUS
A380 HARD LANDING

AVWEB
MEETS FAA ADMINISTRATOR RANDY BABBITT
"If it used to fly, if it does fly, or
if it's possibly gonna fly, you'll find it here," says Randy Babbitt of
his first AirVenture as FAA Administrator (though it's hardly his first
time at the show). AVweb caught up with the new Administrator at the
KidVenture section of the show.

BEAR
360
If this airplane looks like a 2:3 scale
Bearcat, that's exactly the idea. The Russian-made Bear 360 is aimed at
pilots who want a high-performance sport recreation aircraft but can't
afford a real warbird. In this video, Skip Holm explains what the
Bear 360 is all about.

ARMLESS
PILOT JESSICA COX AT OSHKOSH
Jessica Cox, the first person with no arms to
be granted a light sport pilot license by the FAA, met with AVweb
at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2009. As you watch the video, be prepared to
never complain about anything ever again. (For more on Jessica, visit

IN
THE PATTERN OVER OSHKOSH
Sitting in front of your computer
thinking how awesome it would be if you could at least get up in the air
for a few minutes and fly around the patch at Oshkosh? We feel ya
and that's why we strapped on some cameras for this bonus video, which
gives you an aerial tour of the EAA AirVenture grounds.

WHAT
NOW, TERRAFUGIA? Sometimes even the brightest young minds
aren't enough to sort out the many and varied challenges of designing
aircraft, so Terrafugia's brain trust is going back to the drawing board
and expects a much better roadable aircraft to result. In the latest
installment of our AVweb Insider blog, Glenn Pew muses over the
long, uncertain road the Terrafugia project is traveling.

AIRVENTURE
THE DAY AFTER So, did everyone at AVweb enjoy
AirVenture? Paul Bertorelli did. Even though he's been to a couple dozen
of these and didn't get far from his laptop, he still managed to
recapture a little of that air show excitement this year. Read all about
the cool things he saw (and tire-kicked) at EAA AirVenture 2009 in the
latest installment of our AVweb Insider blog.
