CUBS
2 OSHKOSH
To mark
the 75th anniversary of the incomparable Piper Cub, nearly 100 Cubs flew
into AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Sunday. AVweb's Russ
Niles interviewed Clyde Smith Jr. about how the event was
organized.
BENDIX/KING'S
NEW PRODUCTS AT OSH
At
AirVenture 2012, Bendix/King announced that it's back in the avionics
market with two new products, the KMA30 audio panel and an interesting
app called myWingman. The company's Jeff Simon gave AVweb a
demonstration of the new products.
AKOYA
MULTI-MODAL AIRCRAFT
LISA
Airplanes' Akoya light sport aircraft can land on pavement, water or
snow. It also boasts impressive performance. The flying prototype was at
AirVenture 2012, where visitors couldn't help but make comparisons to
Icon's A5.
FOREFLIGHT'S
NEW ADVISOR UPDATE
As the
leading aviation flight planning app, Foreflight has been a mile a
minute with revisions and improvements. Here at AirVenture 2012, they've
announced a new set of revisions that include sophisticated but
easy-to-use routing and altitude functions.
AVIDYNE
ANNOUNCES THE IFD440
It'll
be a year before you can get one, but Avidyne announced its plan for a
drop-in replacement to the almost ubiquitous Garmin GNS 430. It will
have a touchscreen and buttons, as well as advanced capability for two
units to work together.
SENNHEISER
INTRODUCES S1 HEADSET WITHOUT THE ANR
Headset
manufacturer Sennheiser introduced the little brother to their
top-of-line S1 digital ANR headset. The S1 passive sports many of the
same fit-and-feel improvements such as adjustable pressure on the
headband and has a control box for volume and music input with
auto-muting. It lacks the active noise reduction, but it also only costs
$369.
JEPPESEN
KICKS IT UP A NOTCH
The
next version of Jeppesen's iPad app, JeppFD, is pegged for release this
September. The new version has an improved user interface better
organized around phases of flight. It also includes new tools, such as a
night mode and highlighter. The latter version allows you to highlight
your assigned taxi route right on an airport diagram, as well as make
notes. It will also include much-awaited datalink weather. Jeppesen will
also introduce a new pricing structure that will allow for multiple
installs of the JeppFD for less money than in the past.
PORTABLE
AND BACKUP EFIS SOLUTIONS DEBUT AT OSHKOSH
Hey,
buddy, is that an EFIS in your pocket? If you went to Oshkosh this year,
it might be. Aviation Consumer's Jeff Van West took a look at
three backup and portable electronic flight displays that offer new
capabilities in tiny packages.
GARMIN'S
PORTABLE ADS-B RECEIVER
Garmin's GDL39 streams free weather and traffic data
to an iPad or Garmin portable GPS. AVweb's Jeff Van West tried it
out on the way to Oshkosh this year and shares his thoughts.
VAN'S
ROOMIER RV-14
Van's
Aircraft is meeting fans of their popular RV-7 aerobatic sport plane
halfway -- with a new model, the RV-14, that offers a roomier cabin and
baggage compartment. You can still do the occasional roll in it,
reassures Van's spokesman Gus Funnell in this video explaining where the
RV-14 fits in between the RV-7 and RV-10 models.
SUPER
TUCANO AT AIRVENTURE
Embraer
launched a public relations offensive at AirVenture Oshkosh in support
of its bid to supply the Air Force's light air support aircraft.
IFLIGHTPLANNER
WITH IPAD INTERFACE
iFlightPlanner.com,
through cooperation with Sennheiser, offers features, price (there's a
free version), and portability that make it a competitive option for
comprehensive one-stop flight planning on the go. If you're a pilot, try
it yourself at iFlightPlanner.com.

CUBS
SHINE, AVIONICS BUZZ
On AirVenture's pre-opening day, AVweb covered the Cubs 2
Oshkosh mass arrival, which turned out to be a yellow-tinged festival of
people who know how to land airplanes. What a delight. We also heard
some ambitious plans from Bendix/King and Avidyne. Paul Bertorelli has
all the scuttlebutt from OSH on the AVweb Insider blog.

TWO
LSA AMPHIBS
Did you ever stop to think that LSA sales aren't zooming because the
things aren't enough fun? With sleek, sporty amphibs, Icon and LISA say
they're addressing the fun deficit. On the AVweb Insider blog,
Paul Bertorelli charts the fun, price, range, and speed of these
competitors.

CESSNA'S
SMA DIESEL PLAY
At AirVenture 2012, Cessna showed up with its new 182 NXT SMA-powered
diesel. The engine itself was a surprise, but not the fact that it was
diesel. Question is, will the airplane be the world-beater that some
imagine, just because it's a diesel? For the answer, says Paul
Bertorelli on the AVweb Insider blog, we have to look outside the
U.S.
