We hope you like hot pink! Thursday morning saw a record gathering of female pilots on AeroShell Square here at EAA AirVenture. The rendezvous reminded visitors to the show that aviation isn't just for the boys' club and hopefully encouraged women of all ages and backgrounds to pursue their interest in flying. Wagstaff Comments on "Incident" back to top 

Wagstaff Late-Night Runway Incident Under Review

World-renowned air show performer Patty Wagstaff has confirmed to AVweb that "an incident" involving her took place on a runway at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh late Thursday night and that police and security officials are now reviewing the chain of events. "All I can say is that I was in a place that I shouldn't have been and an incident took place," she told AVweb. She said that under the advice of legal counsel, she can't comment further and that the circumstances of the incident are "under review."

EAA spokesman Dick Knapinski confirmed to AVweb that the incident took place. "My understanding is that they were coming from the Gathering of Eagles [EAA's gala dinner] and were heading back to their hotel when they stopped to check an airplane," Knapinski said. "They ended up in a location where they weren't supposed to be."

Jeppesen Offers New VFR Eye Candy

Hoping to attract the new crop of light sport and other pilots to its products at an early stage in their careers, Jeppesen this week at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008 announced a new series of sectional-like charts. The new charts, dubbed "VFR+GPS" to describe their optimization for use in a VFR environment supplemented by GPS, are an attempt to reinvent the classic FAA sectional and are based on the company's European charts, in use since 1995. The new charts deploy what Jeppesen calls "state-of-the-art" technology in their design and offer a much cleaner look with less symbology. The trade-off is greater use of text to impart the same information.

The new charts include several features Jeppesen says its research indicates will make them more useful and easier to read. For example, the charts are printed on one side of the paper only; the other side is used for various legends, airport diagrams, airspace descriptions and ATC frequencies. The charts also include latitude/longitude data for various VFR checkpoints depicted. Additionally, Jeppesen says its coverage areas differ from the traditional ones used by the FAA and were determined by analyzing data from historical VFR flight plan data. In some cases, the same coverage is available in a single Jeppesen chart that would normally take two FAA sectionals. Available now for Florida and Georgia as well as part of the Great Lakes, including Oshkosh, WI, the new charts will retail for $9.99. Jeppesen will expand its coverage to the entire lower 48 by the end of 2009 approximately 10 charts at a time every calendar quarter.

Lycoming's New LSA Engine

For light airframes, Lycoming's 100-horsepower O-235 series has proven a durable choice and now the company is updating it for the emerging LSA market with the new IO-233. The O-235 serves as the basis for this new engine, but it has electronic ignition, a throttle-body injector unit and redesigned induction plumbing, according to Mike Kraft, Lycoming's chief engineer. The powerplant was also placed on a diet and is 40 pounds lighter than the original O-235. For durability, it also sports the roller tappets Lycoming has been installing in most of its new engines. The rollers reduce cam wear and spalling.

Record-Setting Gathering Of Women Pilots

Anyone on Aeroshell Square at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday found their way blocked by a sea of pink-shirted women that covered the concrete from the KC-135 Tanker to the Ford Trimotor to the DC-3s. An estimated 1,000 women pilots turned up to be seen and photographed in an effort to set a record as being the largest gathering of women pilots in one place at one time.

"This idea, spawned by EAA consultant Patricia Luebke, has taken off," said Elissa Lines, VP of Development for EAA. "We hope that the sheer number of us gathered here today on AeroShell Square will inspire other women and girls to take a chance on aviation, or even just to try out flying for fun, or more."

So, who was there? Patty Wagstaff, Julie Clark, Debbie Rihn-Harvey, Jackie Warda - all air show greats, stood shoulder to shoulder with Women Airforce Service Pilots who ferried WWII aircraft and trained cadets in the 1940s, as well as engineers such as Anna Mracek Dietrich (Terrafugia) and educators, including Dr. Peggy Chabrian, President of Women in Aviation, International. Mary Grady, from AvWeb, and this reporter, despite her feelings about pink, made the trek to the square, too.

Where did they come from? All over the U.S., and abroad, too. Michelle Bassenesi, a flight instructor, flew in from Rome, Italy, where she teaches, just to be counted. Another flew her 1996 Pulsar (which she built and has flown for 1,000 hours) from Oregon, to be at this show. Two more teamed up and arrived for the first time on their own in a Cessna 172.

And what did they prove? That women who fly (and several who build) do come to EAA AirVenture, and in numbers that can influence the next generation of general aviation pilots, who might just be women, too.

Skybike Under Development

Among the latest ideas for roadable aircraft is Sam Bousfield's Skybike, a three-wheeled two-seat motorcycle that will convert itself, with the simple pull of a lever, into an airplane. Beyond its slippery bullet-shaped design, the most eye-catching piece of engineering on the vehicle will be its patent-pending telescoping wing which retracts the lifting surfaces into the fuselage aft of the cockpit. The stress-bearing fuselage will be made from carbon fiber and will house the derated 120 hp motorcycle engine (options being from Yamaha and Suzuki) neatly packed behind the cockpit.

Two ducts, positioned in front of the rear wheels, will feed the fan propelling the aerial configuration of the vehicle. A forward canard will provide flight control as well as limited use in road-going cornering. Tiperons will be used for flight control on the main wings. "We'd like to have a flying prototype by the summer of 2009," claims Bousfield who has contracted Swift Engineering, famed for their work on the Eclipse 400 as well as Indycar racecar designs, to assist with the development of the design. The Skybike is expected to be initially offered as a $50K kit and will be slip into the aviation sector as an LSA.

Lindbergh Foundation Partners With Patty Wagstaff To Save African Wildlife

Patty Wagstaff's incredible flying exploits are well-known to millions of fans, but less well-known is how Patty spends her off-season -- for the last six years, she has spent the winter in Africa, training park wardens in Kenya, so they can fly air patrols to deter poachers. Under Patty's instruction, the accident rate of the patrol pilots has declined by more than 50 percent, and elephant populations have increased more than 25 percent. On Thursday, Lindbergh Foundation President Knox Bridges announced that the foundation will partner up with Patty as a fundraiser for that project. "The work Patty is doing is in perfect harmony with the Foundation's mission of balancing technology and the environment," Bridges said. "Anti-poaching pilots need to fly low, slow, and with precision, and who better to teach them those techniques than Patty Wagstaff."

The Foundation also announced that a Lindbergh-Lycoming grant will go to Ganesh Raman, a professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, to study the use of high-frequency sound waves to reduce noise from aircraft engines. The $10,580 grant represents the cost of building Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis airplane. Applications for 2009 grants will be accepted through Oct. 30. WristWriter Handy For Pilots

OK, it looks even goofier than a kneeboard, but it might be that much more handy. Jack Cribbs is a woodworker from Plymouth, Mass., who needed a better way to write down measurements. Realizing what he needed was a pad and pen attached to his wrist, he went into his shop and put together WristWriter in about two hours. "I almost didn't try it on," says Jack, "because it looked too goofy even for me. But I decided to give it a week." It worked so well he has used it ever since and started selling it at home shows. A pilot walked up to him and said, "That's a pilot product."

Cribbs isn't a pilot, but he started selling them at Sun 'n Fun and caught the attention of Sporty's Pilot Shops. Now Sporty's sells the WristWriter for $19.95. The paper is on a roller system that doubles as a pen holder. The paper rolls are water-resistant, so your notes won't go away when you jump out to tie down the airplane in a rain shower. The kit also contains extra velco pads to attach a cellphone, flashlight or other item (Cribbs keeps his tape measure there).
