SUN
'N FUN OPENS TODAY The clouds have parted, the threat of rain
seems to be past and the forecast for the rest of the week is for blue
skies and sunshine here in Lakeland, Fla. The show site is busy, with
the usual mix of turboprops and sport planes, jets and ultralights, kit
aircraft, and long lines of homebuilts and classic airplanes on the
flight lines. Signs of the ongoing economic uncertainty in the U.S. are
not front and center here, but those signs are not too hard to find with
a little scratching beneath the surface. All this week we'll be bringing
you stories about all the new products, the companies who are moving
forward full speed ahead, the innovators who are bringing new ideas to
aviation, and the creative ways folks are coping even as the economy
starts to show positive signs of recovery. We'll also check out some
seaplanes, Sun 'n Fun's world-class aerobatic shows, and bring you a
taste of all the many facets of the aviation world on display here.
Check your inbox every day this week for our news reports and links to
our daily videos and podcasts. More...

CESSNA
UPDATE ON SKYCATCHER PROGRAM Cessna is showing off a bright
purple mockup of its SkyCatcher LSA front and center at its exhibit, and
the company reiterated this week that it intends to continue with the
program despite the crashes of two test aircraft during spin testing. In
the coming weeks, Cessna said, it will gather additional wind tunnel
data, then combine that information with what it learned from the recent
spin tests to refine the SkyCatcher configuration before flight testing
is resumed. The design was tweaked after the first accident also, when
Cessna increased the size of the tail. The company is scheduled to hold
a forum about the SkyCatcher later this week, but is not expected to
release any additional details about the test program. When the airplane
crashed on March 19 it was undergoing a very aggressive spin test
regime, power on and cross controlled, Cessna said. The aircraft was
slightly damaged but is being repaired. More...

There's Nothing Like Spring
Break for Pilots!
Well, it's obvious that it takes more than the economy to keep people
who love to fly away from Sun 'n Fun. And clearly the word continues to
spread about Lightspeed's Zulu headset. People have been
coming into the booth from the minute we opened, telling us why they're
changing their minds about what they thought was the world's best
headset. See some of their stories on

CANADIANS
RECONSIDERING PASSENGER RULE Canadian authorities are
considering a rewrite of commercial charter regulations in response to a
request from Texas Turbines for full recognition of a U.S. Supplemental
Type Certificate (STC) on its Cessna Caravan engine conversion. The
company puts 900-horsepower Garrett turbines in the Caravan, replacing
the 600-675 horsepower PT-6s that come standard, but a quirk in Canadian
regulations is keeping many operators from making the switch. When
single-engine turboprops were first allowed to carry passengers in IFR
conditions, Transport Canada inserted a requirement that only
"factory-built" aircraft would qualify. In a podcast
interview, Texas Turbines President Bobby Bishop says he's making
headway convincing Canadian authorities to reconsider the pax ban for
modified aircraft such as the Super Van 900. More...

ATC TAPES RELEASED IN PRIVATE PILOT KING AIR INCIDENT The FAA
on Monday released additional tapes of the conversations between air
traffic controllers and Doug White, the low-time private pilot who
successfully landed a twin-engine King Air in Florida last week after
the pilot died at the controls. The new tape documents the first 14
minutes of radio calls, starting with White's first transmission, when
he declares an emergency and asks for help. The airplane continued to
climb up to 17,000 feet until Miami air traffic controller Lisa Grimm, a
commercial pilot with a multi rating, was able to help him find the
correct way to turn off the autopilot and level off the airplane. "I
disengaged it. I'm flying the airplane by hand," White said. "You find
me the widest, longest runway you can, ma'am." Fort Myers air traffic
controller Dan Favio then contacted a King Air pilot he knew, Kari
Sorenson, who was able to help relay information to White so he could
successfully land the airplane. For the full 14-minute tape, posted at
the Naple News Web site, click here (MP3 file). More...

HOSTAGES
FREED IN JAMAICAN STANDOFF Jamaican, described by authorities
as a "mentally challenged youngster" was nabbed by police early Monday
after he took six members of the flight crew of a CanJet Boeing 737
hostage late Sunday in Montego Bay and demanded to be flown to Cuba.
None of the hostages were hurt when police stormed the aircraft after
eight hours of negotiations broke down, but early in the drama it's
alleged that the hijacker almost killed the First Officer, whose face
was grazed by a bullet when a gun discharged on the tarmac. Oddly
enough, if the hijacker had a ticket, he would have gone to Cuba as the
charter flight was scheduled to stop in Santa Clara, Cuba on its way to
Halifax, Nova Scotia. The man barged through security guards, all of
whom were unarmed, and briefly held some of more than 180 passengers and
crew but he quickly set the passengers and two of the crew free after
they gave him money. The freed hostages, all Canadian, were taken to
local hotels. More...
