Top News: Klapmeier, Cirrus Shake-Out
Continues |
|
 |
|
Alan Klapmeier will be replaced as chairman of the board of Cirrus Aircraft by the end of August and it will be up to the board to decide if he continues as a board member. In a wide-ranging podcast interview Saturday, Cirrus Aircraft CEO Brent Wouters told AVweb that Klapmeier has known for "several months" that his contract as
board chairman will not be renewed. Wouters also said he considered Klapmeier's attempt to buy the VisionJet program a "sideshow" and a "long shot" and that in the end he believed that Klapmeier could
not raise the necessary money. He said it was his belief that the two parties were "very close" to a deal when Klapmeier suspended negotiations. Wouters said he doubts there will be future
negotiations but he's not ruling them out. Klapmeier said through a spokesperson that he'll have more to say on the matter later. Wouters said there may be a silver lining to the controversy.
Wouters said there have been an unspecified number of inquiries from qualified investors interested in funding the development program for the jet. Regardless of whether any of those deals
materialize, Wouters said Cirrus will continue to fund the jet's development from cash flow, which will take longer than he'd like. He said the core company remains strong and sales are steadily
improving.

Thinking About Learning to Fly? You're Not
Alone |

A worldwide effort to inspire interest in aviation is being launched next May 15 with the first International Learn To Fly Day. Jason Blair, spokesman for the National Association of Flight
Instructors, says the idea is to get those already involved in aviation to spend a day promoting it to their family friends and coworkers by getting them out to the airport and, hopefully, into the
air. "We want to get as many people around the world to get people interested in flying for one day," Blair said.
The effort was launched at AirVenture Oshkosh with charter sponsors NAFI, EAA, AOPA, Sporty's, REMOS and Cessna and Blair said he hopes the list grows. "We're asking for industry partners and
ideas," he said. There are any number of things individuals and companies can do to promote aviation but the single most important is to get non-flyers into the air. "Let's just get people out and
going flying," he said.

Without too much difficulty, this year at AirVenture Oshkosh we found three light sport category ready-to-fly aircraft available for less than $65,000 the Cheetah, X-Air LS, and the Aerotrek A240. There are others in the price range; this is just a random sample from a group of high-wing, front-engined, tricycle-gear aircraft we saw at the show (the Aerotrek
A220, pictured, is that company's taildragger version of the A240). The Cheetah came in at a base of $48,500 and is expecting SLSA approval next month. The X-Air LS was displayed on sale for $59,900
and had first delivery last year at OSH. The $63,000 Aerotrek A240 has delivered 45 aircraft in the U.S., but not under the Aerotrek name, which was adopted in April. As the most expensive of the
three, Aerotrek's A240 also offers the fastest cruise ("120 mph-plus," according to the company, compared to a VNE of 125 for the wider Cheetah, and 113 mph X-Air LS). The A240 also offers folding
wings to facilitate trailering. For this price in this group you are getting a tube-and-fabric airplane with externally braced wings and cub-like flat-airfoil tail surfaces. And, yes, you may find
yourself paying more for upgrades (like Mode C transponders) to suit your needs.
The fit and finish of each aircraft was similar between the X-Air and Cheetah, both of which may require the slightest extra attention during ingress and egress to avoid cables or brake lines. The
X-Air felt smaller than the Cheetah (we did manage to fit two six-plus footers comfortably in the Cheetah), but the Cheetah's throttle-integrated moveable armrest arrangement felt less solid than we'd
prefer. The Aerotrek was impressive for fit and finish and in our opinion shouldn't be left off the list if you're shopping for a new aircraft in this price range.

Every pilot who flies into Wittman Regional Airport during AirVenture tries to put his or her best foot forward but some come up a little short. While there have so far been no major accidents or
injuries at the show (as of Saturday afternoon) pilots do make mistakes and that's where the Civil Air Patrol comes in. CAP crews were on duty throughout the event tracking down stray ELT signals and
hunting for aircraft whose pilots forgot to close flight plans. "By [Friday morning] we had 32 'finds,'" said Lt. Col. Kathleen Wiley, of Biloxi, Miss., who was on duty in the North 40 aircraft
camping area with Cadet First Lt. Kayla Galarneau, of Butte, Mont., and Cadet Capt. Warren Martin, of Roanoke, Va.
"We compete against the other patrols," said Galarneau as she and Martin swung an antenna attached to a radio direction finder around trying to isolate an ELT signal. Most false signals result from
hard landings. And most open flight plan culprits are Canadian, Wiley noted. Hundreds of CAP kids from all over the country help out at Oshkosh and most stay at a camp on the field.

Cirrus CEO Brent Wouters says there's been a lot of reaction to former CEO Alan Klapmeier's decision to suspend negotiations for acquisition of the Vision Jet program. Wouters told
AVweb's Russ Niles that one of the results of Klapmeier's announcement was interest from other investors in the jet program. Listen in for the details.

Shortly before this year's EAA AirVenture, contributing photographer Mariano Rosales got his daddy rating but even with a new baby, he managed to make it to Oshkosh and take a
bevy of great photos. Faced with the challenged of capturing the event for those who couldn't make it, Mariano's stitched them together into seven amazing panoramic photos. These panoramas are
super-widescreen images you can view, zoom in on, and explore at your leisure so grab a cup of coffee and click through for links to all seven.
