|AVflash! EPA Addresses Future Fuel
FINISHED REVIEWING AVGAS COMMENTS
Protection Agency has heard the concerns of the general aviation
industry about the potential elimination of lead in aviation fuel and a
spokesman promised the impacts on GA will be at the forefront of future
deliberations on the issue. Glenn Passavant told a forum on the future
of aviation gas at AOPA Summit the agency is moving deliberately on the
issue and not rushing the process. "We do not have a specific timeline
for moving forward with a [Notice of Proposed Rulemaking]," Passavant
said. He said EPA is working with the FAA and aviation groups and
stressed the "endangerment finding" that would trigger legislative
action is not imminent. In answer to a question from the floor, however,
Passavant said he did not agree that such a finding is a foregone
conclusion and suggested market forces might decide the fate of 100LL.
He declined an interview with AVweb to discuss his presentation
in more detail, saying such interaction with the media must be approved
by the EPA's public affairs officials. EPA officials in Washington were
unable to field our questions and referred us to their Web site.

NEEDED FOR FUEL TESTS
Leaders of the two main piston
aircraft engine manufacturers are calling on the general aviation
community to put the issue of the future of aviation gasoline on the
radars of their representatives in Washington. Lycoming Senior Vice
Presdent Michael Kraft and Teledyne Continental CEO Rhett Ross said
critical funding for an FAA engine test cell used to evaluate
alternative fuels is being held up in the Senate and is needed to keep
the process going. Both executives urged people to contact their elected
representatives to get the money passed. Meanwhile, Ross and Kraft said
in podcast interviews with AVweb that an industry as small as GA
can only support one specialized fuel and discounted discussion of
trying to create different fuel streams for low and high compression
engines. Kraft said demand is what will drive development and
sustainability of a replacement fuel for 100LL."It's what keeps me awake
at night. Demand," he said. Both said that while the industry could
create engines to run on whatever fuel is available, a viable
replacement is needed for 100LL for the hundreds of thousands of engines
already in service.
