CORVALIS HAS TOUCH-SCREEN PANEL
Cessna has announced a major
upgrade of the Corvalis high performance single, featuring the "first
touch-screen-controlled glass flight deck ever designed for a piston
aircraft" the company said in a news release. The new Intrinzic panel
was designed by Cessna but is based on the Garmin G2000 and features two
14-inch wide HD screens that transmit touch commands via an infrared
grid under the glass, rather than the normal surface resistance sensors.
"We've taken an airplane with incredible performance and made flying it
even more natural and instinctive with Intrinzic," said CEO Jack Pelton.
"This interface is so advanced, it's the same as what you'll find in the
upcoming Cessna Citation Ten business jet. More...

RAINS CHALLENGING FOR SUN 'N FUN LAUNCH
As exhibitors prepped
for opening day at Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, Fla., on Monday, a huge
frontal system spread rain and wind across the region, slowing down
their efforts and keeping the pattern mostly quiet. Nonetheless, by
Monday evening, all of the major exhibitors were set up and ready to
welcome visitors for Tuesday's opening day. Weather reports showed a
chance of rain and thunderstorms at about 40 to 50 percent for the next
few days, with clear weather expected for Friday and the weekend. The
mood among exhibitors so far seems to be cautious, as aircraft sales
haven't yet shown signs of robust recovery. But for those ready to buy,
Sun 'n Fun is the season's first big general aviation show, with some of
everything on site, from ultralights to light sport aircraft to turbines
and light jets, plus all the latest avionics and pilot gear.

CUTS STAFF PENDING D-JET FUNDING
Peter Maurer, president of
Diamond Aircraft, said this week he has laid off 213 workers at the
company's facility in London, Ontario, while waiting for a decision on a
loan from Canada's government. "We are disappointed and frustrated in
the extreme to have to take this action," Maurer said in a news release
on Monday. "We had deferred these cost-cutting measures as long as
possible, while awaiting a positive response to our request for a
federal government loan. At this time we are still awaiting a formal
response." The job cuts mostly affect workers in the D-Jet program,
which has stalled in the face of increased costs and delays. The project
is more than 60 percent complete, Maurer said, and if the government
financing will come through, he will recall all the laid-off workers and
get the program "back on track." More...

MANDATES CONTROLLER WAKE-UP CALLS
Reacting to last week's
incident at Reagan National Airport when a sleeping controller
supervisor failed to respond to radio calls from two airplane crews late
at night, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt has announced an "interim plan" that he says will ensure
it won't happen again. The plan requires controllers at radar facilities
to contact towers where a single controller covers the overnight shift
to confirm they are ready when an incoming flight is approaching.
Babbitt also ordered a nationwide review of the ATC system to ensure
that appropriate backup procedures are being used. "I am determined to
make sure we do not repeat Wednesday's unacceptable event," Babbitt

INSIDER BLOG: SNOOZING AT DCA TOWER LAST WEEK'S CRISIS DU
But was it really? With Japan sinking and Libya
exploding, the press still had a field day with a midshift controller
nodding off in the Reagan National tower, as if Randy Babbitt really
