End Of An Era For EAA -- Poberezny Retires

Just about a year after hiring Rod Hightower to take over the day-to-day operations of EAA, Tom Poberezny on Tuesday officially announced his retirement from the organization founded by his father. "I've been with EAA for 49 years," Poberezny said, "and I'm proud of what we've done together. EAA is a way of life, a culture, and it's very special to me." Going forward, EAA has "tremendous potential," Poberezny said. "What you all can do for aviation is incredible." Poberezny is about to turn 65 soon, and he said there are still things he wants to do, places to go, and a lot he wants to share. "EAA is a 24/7 job," he said. "What I won't miss is constantly checking my Blackberry and getting phone messages in the middle of the night."

Poberezny announced his decision in a last-minute news conference held under the historic brown arch at the edge of the flight line, near the center of the show. He said he had no prepared remarks but wanted to speak from the heart. "This is a message to the members," he said to the press corps. "I hope you capture the heartfelt thanks and sincere appreciation I feel to all the members and volunteers. I want to say thank you." He ended with words of encouragement. "I'm excited about the future. Look at those blue skies, that flight line, and all those airplanes. This is the best Oshkosh ever."

Kestrel's New Venture back to top 

Kestrel Opens Mod Company

While it goes through the certification process for its turboprop single, Kestrel Aircraft is planning to help owners of older high performance aircraft update them to modern standards. Kestrel Aeroworks will install Avidyne R9 panel packages in existing aircraft, starting with Piper Meridians. "The purpose of Kestrel Aeroworks is take existing aircraft and make them into more modern, more comfortable, more pilot friendly aircraft," said CEO Alan Klapmeier. Other modifications are also in the works, including ergonomic enhancements, speed mods and airframe tweaks. Meanwhile design and other preliminary work continues on the company's own airplane, which Klapmeier said he hopes will be available in three years.

The company is now taking "expressions of interest" from those who think they may want a Kestrel and Klapmeier said those who complete one will be the first to be able to put a deposit on one. He expects to be taking deposits in about six months.

Aerobatic LSA Snap Debuts At AirVenture

The new Snap aerobatic airplane, built in Italy by Dallair Aeronautica, was introduced to the U.S. market on Tuesday afternoon at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. The single-seat taildragger, with a low wing and a bubble canopy, is designed to compete in International Aerobatic Club events. SportAir USA is importing the airplane with several options -- it can be certified as Experimental-Exhibition model, an S-LSA, or an Experimental LSA. It's powered by an EPApower SA-R915i engine, also built in Italy, based on a Rotax 900 crankcase, or buyers can choose the 100hp Rotax 912ULS. The Snap has inverted fuel and oil systems, G limits of plus-6 and minus-3, and a roll rate of 330 degrees per second.

The airplane on display at Oshkosh is the third one built by Dallaire. SportAir CEO Bill Canino said he will demo it at several aerobatic events around the country this year, in the primary, sportsman, and intermediate classes. He hopes to be selling it by early next year as an S-LSA for the U.S. market, with a debut at the Sebring Sport Aviation Expo. The airframe is built of steel tubing, with aluminum wings, for a basic empty weight of 628 pounds. Top speed is 180 knots. Stall speed is about 50 knots, Canino said, but he hopes to get that down to 45.

In The Works At BRS: Electronic Ignition, Kestrel Chute

Larry Williams, CEO of BRS Aerospace, said at EAA AirVenture on Tuesday that the parachute system his company is designing for the new Flight Design C4 four-seat airplane will be the first with an electronic ignition system. "The advantage will be ease of use and reliability," he said. It also may be possible to design the system so it can self-activate in the event of pilot incapacitation. His company is working on research projects to develop parachute systems for unmanned aerial vehicles, he said, so he expects those results could transfer to GA airplanes. He is also working with Kestrel Aircraft to develop a parachute for their big turboprop. "The size and speed are a challenge, but it can be done," Williams said.

Asked for more details about the electronic-ignition system, Williams said it would replace the current pull-handle activation with a button for the pilot to press. Instead of pulling a handle, which pulls a cable and springs that activate the rocket-launching mechanism, the electronic system would simply send an electronic signal to a squib which would ignite the explosive. Battery backup would ensure that it would operate even if the electrical system fails. Exactly where to place the button and ensure that it couldn't be accidentally deployed is still under discussion. Williams also said his company has grown despite the economic downturn because they are producing thousands of cargo parachutes for the military. Those contracts help BRS to thrive as a business, he said, but he has no intention of abandoning the aviation market.

Compared to Rotax and even Continental, Lycoming hasn't had much of a presence in the light sport market. It does now. Lycoming announced this week that its O-233 four-cylinder engine is nearly ready for volume production and that a handful of airplanes are flying with it, including a new Kitfox and a pair of Renegade E-LSAs here at AirVenture. In this video, Lycoming's GM, Michael Kraft, takes us on a tour of the 115hp electronic-ignition O-233. Although the Kitfox version has carbureted induction, the experimental models can also have fuel injection.
