END
OF AN ERA FOR EAA -- POBEREZNY RETIRES Just about a year
after hiring Rod Hightower to take over the day-to-day operations of
EAA, Tom Poberezny on Tuesday officially announced his retirement from
the organization founded by his father. "I've been with EAA for 49
years," Poberezny said, "and I'm proud of what we've done together. EAA
is a way of life, a culture, and it's very special to me." Going
forward, EAA has "tremendous potential," Poberezny said. "What you all
can do for aviation is incredible." Poberezny is about to turn 65 soon,
and he said there are still things he wants to do, places to go, and a
lot he wants to share. "EAA is a 24/7 job," he said. "What I won't miss
is constantly checking my Blackberry and getting phone messages in the
middle of the night." More...

AEROBATIC
LSA SNAP DEBUTS AT AIRVENTURE The new Snap aerobatic airplane,
built in Italy by Dallair Aeronautica, was introduced to the U.S. market
on Tuesday afternoon at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. The single-seat

THE WORKS AT BRS: ELECTRONIC IGNITION, KESTREL CHUTE Larry
Williams, CEO of BRS Aerospace, said at EAA AirVenture on Tuesday that
the parachute system his company is designing for the new Flight Design
C4 four-seat airplane will be the first with an electronic ignition
system. "The advantage will be ease of use and reliability," he said. It
also may be possible to design the system so it can self-activate in the
event of pilot incapacitation. His company is working on research
projects to develop parachute systems for unmanned aerial vehicles, he
said, so he expects those results could transfer to GA airplanes. He is
also working with Kestrel Aircraft to develop a parachute for their big
turboprop. "The size and speed are a challenge, but it can be done,"
Williams said. More...

PODCAST:
ECLIPSE THE BOOK The rise and
fall of Eclipse Aviation and its innovative EA500 jet represents one of
the more interesting aviation business case studies in recent years.
Lavishly funded and relentlessly promoted, the airplane never quite
lived up to its billing, and despite more than a billion dollars in
invested capital, the company went bust in 2008. In his new book, The
Great Eclipse: A Dream Design Bankrupted by Marketing and Mismanagement
and Saved by a Sensible Business Strategy, author Dennis
Maxwell details how Eclipse came out of the ground with a flourish
in 2000 and bagged what it claims were thousands of orders but
encountered insurmountable manufacturing and development problems before
it could turn a profit. In this podcast, Maxwell details his experiences
at Eclipse he was involved in early marketing development
and explains what finally killed what many assumed was a can't-miss
airplane.

MINERAL OILS
EXPLAINED While other
companies sell semi-synthetic engine oils, Phillips 66 has stuck with
its well-proven XC product, a mineral-based oil with additive packages.
In this podcast from AirVenture 2011 in Oshkosh, Conoco-Phillips's
Tony Negri explains why Phillips believes mineral oils are the
best choice. And if you're on the grounds at AirVenture, stop by the
Connoco-Phillips tent just off Connoco-Phillips Plaza. The company has a
number of technical displays designed to demystify the secrets of
aircraft engine oils.
