The line of 7,620 aircraft flown that is the RV series of Van's Aircraft began with one -- and that one, flown originally by Van's founder Dick VanGrunsven in the mid-1960s, is here at Sun 'n Fun
2012, newly restored and flying. The aircraft had been existing in relative anonymity until nearly five years ago, when it attracted the attention of RV enthusiast Paul Dye, who recognized it as a
historic artifact. Dye set up a non-profit, acquired the aircraft and sent the call to the RV community that the restoration of what he terms "RV-1" would need their help. The community responded, and
this year the aircraft flew in to Lakeland, Florida, on its own wings. It's now on tour and headed for one final destination.
Dye says the aircraft had never been a showpiece and the restoration honored that history. The aircraft has the imperfections of a favorite piece of clothing, but Dye says that at 165 mph on 125
hp, it still cruises nearly as well as it did in 1965. Dick VanGrunsven's line of homebuilts was born from modifications he made to this aircraft. It began life as a Stits Playboy, a mostly wood and
fabric kit aircraft originally designed in 1952. That aircraft had wooden wings and a fabric covering with an externally braced wing. Van's desire for improvement added a larger tail, a different cowl
and fuselage profile along with a wing design that would later fly on the RV-3. After an early summer tour, the aircraft is headed to the annual EAA AirVenture Oshkosh airshow and the EAA museum, for
safe keeping.

Dick VanGrunsven is responsible for the most populous homebuilt airplane of all, the RV-3. Five years ago, Van's Aircraft enthusiast Paul Dye found the RV-3's forerunner — a
heavily modified Stits Playboy that became VanGrunsven's prototype — and embarked on a restoration project. The rejuvenated "RV-1" is currently on tour with Dye and will find a permanent home at
the EAA Museum in Oshkosh at this summer's AirVenture fly-in. We spoke with Dye and got a close look at RV-1 at Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, Florida.

While apps for tablets like the iPad and Droid are appearing almost daily, the market thus far has been either or. You either have an iPad or a Droid. But Anywhere Map announced here at Sun 'n Fun
that it's taking a different tack. It's new Anywhere Map Freedom product will run on any of the popular platforms, including the Windows Mobile devices. In this video, Anywhere Map's Jay Humbard told
AVweb that this app is designed to--and does—look much more like a portable GPS than do other aviation apps, which tend to be strong on chart management, flight planning and utilities while
leaving navigation as an also-ran.
Version 1.0 of the product has features such as obstacle warnings, runway alignment tools and vibrant presentation of airspace and other mapping features. It also has Anywhere Map's so-called Cones

The Lindbergh Foundation is taking over the Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Program, which includes the Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Prize, the groups announced at Sun 'n Fun on Tuesday. The two
nonprofit groups share a common mission, Lindbergh Foundation Chairman Larry Williams told AVweb. "There was an opportunity to bring the two groups together and be stronger collectively," he
said. Erik Lindbergh, founder of LEAP, will continue to support and promote the program. Yolanka Wulff, who was CEO of LEAP, will become executive director of The Lindbergh Foundation.
The foundation is hosting a series of forums and events at Sun 'n Fun on Thursday. Erik Lindbergh will talk about the history and future of electric flight in a forum at 1 p.m., and the day will
end with an awards ceremony at Fantasy of Flight in celebration of the group's 35th anniversary. The foundation also is planning an anniversary dinner at the Explorers Club in New York City in May,
with special guests including astronauts Neil Armstrong, James Lovell, and Gene Cernan. AVweb's Mary Grady spoke with Williams at Sun 'n Fun for more details on the news; click here to listen.

Flight Design is making progress with its newest LSA and four-place aircraft projects, the company said in a news conference at Sun 'n Fun on Tuesday. The CTLSi, powered by the new Rotax 912iS
engine, is under development in Europe and flew this week for the first time, Flight Design USA CEO Tom Peghiny told AVweb. The airplane will be on display next month at the Aero
Friedrichshafen show in Germany, and first deliveries are expected in June. The new engine comes with a $12,800 increase in price, but Peghiny said that includes electric trim and a lithium ion
battery. The new engine also will deliver a fuel savings of about 21 percent at cruise speed at altitude, he said.
John Doman, Flight Design marketing director, said the C4 four-place project, which was launched about a year ago, also is moving forward. "Our next big decision is to nail down the avionics," he
said. "We need to get everything to come together to meet our $250,000 target." He added that he expects to have a cockpit mockup on display at Aero. "There's a lot of interest in the airplane," he
said, with about 65 orders so far. The company is offering a $10,000 discount to buyers who place "early bird" orders. AVweb's Mary Grady spoke with Peghiny at Sun 'n Fun about the CTLSi; click here to listen to the podcast.

A JetBlue Airbus captain who reportedly behaved irrationally on a flight from JFK to Las Vegas on Tuesday is being treated for a "medical situation" in an Amarillo, Texas, hospital after being
subdued by some eminently qualified passengers on the flight. The pilot, who has been identified as 49-year-old Clayton Osbon, reportedly became agitated when he was unable to unlock the cockpit door
after a trip to the lavatory. It's not clear whether he was actually ejected from the cockpit and locked out by his first officer, as some reports suggest. After trying twice to get back onto the
flight deck, passengers said he began ranting about al Qaida, Iraq and Iran and advising the passengers "to say your prayers" and that "we're going down." By then a flight attendant was on the
microphone asking for help to subdue the aircraft commander and there was no shortage of volunteers. Many of those on board were on their way to the International Security Conference in Vegas. Former
prison guard David Gonzales wasted little time bringing the situation under control.
Gonzales told ABC News he
put Osbon in a choke hold and held him until he was unconscious. "I just wanted to get him calm, get the plane down and get him some medical assistance," Gonzales is reported as saying. In a YouTube interview with amarillo.com, passenger Gabriel Schonzeit said he was among about six passengers who sat on Osbon to
restrain him while the other pilot diverted to Amarillo.

Embraer made the most of its new association with film star Jackie Chan as the Brazilian company's brand ambassador landed at the Asian Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition on Tuesday with
his spanking new Embraer 650 bizjet. Chan addressed reporters and took part in a ribbon
cutting with Ernest Edwards, president of Embraer Executive Jets to celebrate the introduction of the 650 to China. While it was Chan's star power that attracted the cameras, Embraer had other
business to conduct in Shanghai.
At NBAA last October Embraer announced a major deal with Minsheng Financial Leasing for up to 20 aircraft and it delivered the
first one, a 650, at ABACE. Minsheng Chairman Kong Linshan told reporters the company intends to be one of the top aircraft leasing companies in the world. It's also ordered up to 50 of Gulfstream's
latest aircraft.
Joint ventures involving prominent American companies and Chinese firms are the theme of this years Asian Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition in Shanghai. Last week Cessna announced deals with China's AVIC to build jets and develop GA infrastructure in China. Tuesday, Cessna's VP of Strategy and
Development Mike Shih told an audience at the convention that he expects China to be in the top ten countries for business jet ownership by 2025. "We are delighted to see the Chinese government
understands the economic importance of general aviation and is committed to supporting the industry," he said. "We at Cessna are equally eager to play our part in helping develop Chinese business
aviation from infancy to maturity as quickly as possible." And if Cessna's stamp of approval wasn't enough, Warren Buffet's NetJets also waded in.
The company that pioneered fractional ownership of business jets has announced it will team with a consortium of Chinese investors led by a unit of Beijing-based private-equity fund Hony Capital
and Fung Investments, part of the private investment arm of the families of Dr. Victor Fung and Dr. William Fung. Last month Buffett wrote shareholders telling them he planned to team with quality
investors in China to open up the bizjet market there. Meanwhile both Airbus and Boeing are estimating sales of airliner-based private jets in China at the rate of three to five a year. Boeing says
it's already sold one private 747-8, its latest and largest ever aircraft.
