From Earth to the Moon ... And Back to

Only 12 humans have ever walked on the surface of the Moon; only one of them, Harrison Schmitt, was a scientist, and he came to Sun 'n Fun this week. Schmitt, a geologist, is appearing at several
events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 17 mission. In a news conference on Wednesday morning, he brought to life his long-ago experience. His ship was blasted into space on Dec. 7,
1972, by the last of the Saturn V rockets, he said. At about 34,000 miles from Earth, he snapped the famous photo showing the whole planet, which is still the most-requested shot from NASA. Then he
and Eugene Cernan landed on the Moon, where they spent 75 hours.
"Twenty-two hours of that was outside the lunar module," he said. "We landed in a mountain valley, deeper than the Grand Canyon and just five miles wide." It was a fascinating experience, he said,
to spend time on the lunar surface. "The sky was absolutely black, yet the landscape was brightly lit by the sun," he said. "I never got fully used to that." The combination of the strange light, the
scarcity of landmarks, and the lack of an atmosphere made it tricky to judge distances. The geological samples he collected are still being analyzed, decades later, as new technologies make it
possible to discover new features. One researcher found evidence of water in a Moon sample, using advanced techniques, and some of the work has led to new theories about the origin of the Moon.
Schmitt recently wrote a book, "Return to the Moon," in which he argues that it would be economically feasible to send astronauts to the Moon to mine an element called Helium-3 that could be
transported to Earth to produce energy. Schmitt had much more to say about his flight training in preparation for the mission and his ideas about how we should continue to explore the Moon, in a

After six months of beta testing with real-world users, Andres Darvasi has rolled out FAST, an anywhere-accessible online tool that aims to provide one-stop shopping for aircraft record-keeping,
maintenance and pilot-specific concerns. The level of detail available means that pilots can track individual components from the standpoint of cost and acquisition source, through any weight and
balance effects, to associated regulatory or maintenance deadlines, requirements or squawks, and more. Pilots access the tool through fast-flight.com. Darvasi is making the subscription-based service available with a 60-day free trial period.
After the trial period, pilots who want to continue using the system will need to pay a sign-up fee of $100 followed by a $20 monthly subscription that they can end at any time. The system operates
on a web-based paperless platform, but does offer users the ability to back up, print or download all their stored content at any time in Excel spreadsheet format.

President Obama has nominated Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta to take the position for a five-year term. Huerta was elevated to the post from deputy administrator in December after former
FAA boss Randy Babbitt was arrested for drunk driving and resigned the post. Huerta must be confirmed by the Senate before getting the job but analysts don't seem to view that as an issue. Indeed,
Huerta, whose background is in transportation but not specifically aviation, has kept a fairly low profile since taking over. Leaders of various aviation groups have been congratulatory if not
laudatory in their reaction.
AOPA President Craig Fuller said he "appreciated the attention [Huerta] has given to the concerns of general aviation" and said he looked forward to a "constructive and productive working
relationship" with him. Aircraft Electronics Association President Paula Derks said she was surprised at how quickly Obama made the nomination but was happy he did. "There are too many challenging
issues in the immediate future, including NextGen implementation and the UAV mandate in 2015, to delay appointing a permanent administrator to lead the agency." EAA acknowledged the appointment but
there was no immediate reaction from President Rod Hightower.
The FAA is now working on a final proposal for how it will determine prices for aeronautical chart products, the agency said last week, but no dates were set to complete or implement that plan.
Late last year, the FAA developed a draft proposal to address the issues of security, safety, and cost recovery for its paper and digital electronic products. The agency said it wants to protect
the integrity of its charts, which it says have sometimes been "replicated in a way that did not preserve the integrity of the original product." The FAA also wants to develop a fee structure that
will enable it to recover production costs.
The FAA said it hasn't set any dates for completion of the final proposal or a timeline for implementation, but it plans to keep the aviation community informed about its progress. The agency now
develops aeronautical products and sells them through a network of about 400 authorized aeronautical chart agents, as well as through direct sales to the public. "With the growth of the worldwide
web and advances in personal computing devices, pilots have relied increasingly on digital aeronautical products rather than traditional paper charts," the FAA said. The agency has the authority to
