Embraer launched a public relations assault at AirVenture Oshkosh to shore up its bid to supply the Air Force with light, fast and impressively destructive aircraft for its Light Air Support
competition. Embraer and its U.S. partner Sierra Nevada Corp. had its top executives at a news conference earlier in the week to press its case for the A-29 Super Tucano in a second attempt to secure
the $1 billion deal. There was also a Super Tucano on display and fully staffed at the Embraer booth all week. "The Super Tucano has been proven in combat," said Taco Gilbert, CEO of Sierra Nevada.
The news conference also announced that Embraer and Sierra Nevada had reached a deal with Boeing to allow the aircraft to be equipped with GPS-guided JDAM missiles that are standard issue for the
fourth-generation tactical aircraft that the Super Tucano emulates.
The Super Tucano won the initial competition against Hawker Beechcraft's AT6-B, but the Air Force withdrew the award after Hawker Beech launched a court challenge and the Air Force determined there
were flaws in the procurement process. A fresh competition launched in June and there will be an answer in January. Meanwhile, Hawker Beech briefly displayed a T-6 Texan II at its booth. The AT6-B is
based on the Texan II but they are not the same aircraft. For most of the show, the trainer was on display at Phillips 66 Plaza, but it was fenced off. The trainer flew a demonstration routine on
Saturday, but the description of the routine did not refer to the LAS competition.

One of the hardest things for many new pilots to overcome is their fear of dealing with air traffic control, and a new simulation system aims to offer a real-time ATC experience in the simulator.
PilotEdge uses live controllers synced with pilots flying in simulators to give a real-world experience without all the expense of actually flying. "Becoming comfortable with ATC is not necessarily
that difficult but it can be expensive," Smith said. Because the other pilots and the controllers are live, the interaction and consequences of incorrect interaction are also real.
However, because it is after all an artificial environment, the consequences are less severe and the tone of the controllers is a little different. "It's more of a nurturing environment," Smith
said. Flight schools have been among the early adopters of the technology but there are plenty of individuals who have also signed on to brush up on or learn ATC skills.

Eagle Flights Programs Kicks Off at
AirVenture |

EAA launched its new Young Eagles program for adults, branded simply as Eagle Flights, this week at AirVenture, with a dual flight in a T-6 flown by EAA President Rod Hightower. The first flight
went to Diane Thornton, an educator affiliated with the Boy Scouts' Aviation Explorers program. "When I was growing up, my dad flew a plane in support of his business," she told the media gathered on
the ramp, "but our mother didn't like the idea of her kids going flying." Thornton said she only got to fly with her father once, and that experience left a lasting impression. Jeff Skiles, who leads
the education program at EAA, said the ongoing effort to attract new adults to aviation "will be a major focus for EAA going forward."
Pilots in EAA chapters will be encouraged to not only give introductory flights but also to act as mentors to new pilots, Skiles told AVweb in a podcast interview. Some chapters may conduct
rallies, similar to those for Young Eagles. EAA also plans to offer various kinds of ground-school opportunities, and EAA staff will provide support and counsel to new recruits. Click here to listen to the podcast.

Randall Fishman, who's been bringing various electric aircraft to EAA AirVenture for the last five years or so, turned up this week with his latest creation, a one-seat, battery-powered motorglider
ultralight. The aircraft flew for the first time just last week, Fishman told AVweb on Friday. "It took off in about 150 feet, and it handles really well," he said. The sleek little aircraft is
for sale with a choice of battery packs good for up to one or two hours of flight. The battery also can be recharged by the folded prop while the airplane is soaring. Fishman said the motorgliders,
which are built in the Czech Republic, are available for sale at a starting price of $59,000.
Fishman started flying an electric-powered ultralight in 2007, and since then has created a number of different designs under his company name, ElectraFlyer. He's won several grants and awards for
his innovations from EAA and the Lindbergh Foundation. AVweb's Mary Grady paid a visit to Fishman this week at the far edge of Wittman Field, in the ultralight area; >click here to listen to the interview.
