I've been an avionics tech long enough to remember when the extent of new avionics upgrades included a couple of flip-flop Navcomm radios and an audio panel. Even back then, some owners stumbled
with otherwise simple switchology. Worse case was a missed radio call.
Things have changed. Today's avionics upgrades usually involve tightly integrated glass systems and advanced automation. Just learning how to power up and configure the equipment usually requires
more thought and planning than the Navcomms of 20 years ago. The safety implications are obvious; the operational ones perhaps somewhat less.
It doesn't have to be this way as long as you have a game plan for proper training and set some limits for your flying until you master the basics. Checking your ego outside the cockpit and
avoiding radical instrument panel layouts while setting new personal minimums is a must.
Herewith are some tips to make transitioning to retrofit avionics safer and easier.

Clarity SV: The ADS-B Receiver with Attitude
It's stunning like having a back-up EFIS panel on your iPad or tablet. Clarity SV is GA's most sensitive ADS-B/GPS-WAAS/ADHRS with ADI/HSI depiction and 3-D synthetic vision. Its wi-fi
connection lets your apps display no-cost NEXRAD radar, weather, and traffic for better situational awareness weather or not.

Track Up with Garmin Pilot
With new dynamic navigation maps in Garmin Pilot, you can now choose Track Up map orientation to see what lies ahead. You can also configure maps by turning on or off different
airspaces, airports, and other features. Garmin SafeTaxi ® airport diagrams are integrated right into the map, as well. Plus, you can now annotate procedures to
highlight approach minimums, jot down frequencies, and more.

Later this month, AVweb will unveil a completely redesigned website and e-letter that will deliver news stories, features, video and podcasts in a fresh new format. We've had the redesign in
the works for months and although we'll retain the familiar features that readers find compelling, we'll be streamlining delivery in a way that will make it easier for you find AVweb's deep
well of aviation-related content and in the coming months, we'll be adding new features. Thanks to a more efficient content loading system, we'll be updating the site more frequently with breaking
news.
Our improved site will feature fresh new typography, sharper imagery and the capacity to host more multi-media content. The new design has roll-over menus that will make finding specific articles
and stories quicker and easier and an improved search engine will locate archived material with just a few clicks. In addition, our advertisers will benefit from an array of new options that present
their products and services creatively in ways that complement our new editorial presentation. For the time being, we'll retain our four times weekly e-letter format, with AVwebFlash newsletters on
Monday and Thursday morning, a business aviation e-letter on Wednesday morning and our expanded Friday Feature section with columns, blog, videos and podcasts. Watch the new site launch within a few
weeks.
