Zulu Time ... From
Lightspeed
The new Zulu headset looks different because it is
different. Made with magnesium, stainless steel, and four types of
composite plastics, it's extremely durable and yet weighs just over 13
ounces. Rather than concentrating purely on cutting decibels,
Lightspeed engineers looked at how pilots perceive noise at
different frequencies. You get broader noise attenuation over the entire
audible range. Zulu has more total noise cancellation than any
headset on the market.

'AUDACIOUS'
ECLIPSE CLAIMS PRODUCTION RECORD Although a lot of news about
Eclipse in recent months has focused on various delays in the production
and delivery of its aircraft, the company says it has produced its
"first 100 airplanes faster than any GA jet aircraft manufacturer in
history." In a news release, in which CEO Vern Raburn describes the
effort as "audacious," the company notes that it "has produced and
certified 104 Eclipse 500s since December 31, 2006." Cessna held the
previous record, building 100 Citation 550s in about 18 months, it says.
Eclipse's claims have to come with some caveats, however.

FAA
OFFERS CONTROLLERS MORE MONEY, SAYS CARR Former National Air
Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) President John Carr says on his
web
site that the FAA recently made an offer to the union to resolve
issues resulting from the contract it imposed in 2006. The jargon used
in the memo (PDF) Carr says he obtained from someone in senior
management is difficult to decipher but it appears to offer increased
pay and incentives for some controllers. NATCA says it will issue a
statement today and the FAA would say only that discussions have been
ongoing since last spring. More... |

PC-BASED
AVIO NG SIMULATOR UNVEILED If you're one of the hundreds
waiting to get your hands on the real thing, an Illinois firm has come
up with an Eclipse 500 Avio NG flight simulator to help you pass the
time and tune up your skills for the mandatory type rating course.
Commercial Level Simulators delivered its first PC-based simulator to a
customer on Dec. 22, just two days after the FAA certified the
electronic brains behind the very light jet. "The CLS_VLJ is designed to
give pilots and owners the opportunity to practice for their initial and
recurrent training safely and cost-effectively," said a company news
release. At an introductory price of $15,000, it's not cheap but it's
also not your average joystick-and-plastic-rudder-pedal toy and you'll
need to clear some space in the rec room. More... |

GULFSTREAM
BOOMING, STILL LOOKING AT SUPERSONICS Gulfstream says it's
getting ready to move on to the next phase of testing for its sonic
boom-suppressing technology. As AVweb
reported last year, the company successfully tested a 24-foot
retractable nose boom that all but eliminates the shockwaves that create
the big (and illegal over the U.S.) noise. The boom was originally
tested on an F-15, but Gulfstream VP Pres Henne told the Savannah
Morning News the next step is to test the boom on something more
business jet-like but no timeline was suggested. More... |
