BOMBARDIER
PREDICTS 13,200 BIZJET DELIVERIES IN 10 YEARS Bombardier says
the business jet market is virtually immune to the U.S.'s economic
problems and demand will continue unabated through 2017. The prediction
was made in the company's annual market forecast and is notable because
it's a 33 percent increase over the numbers in last year's forecast. And
the company credits a shift to international markets from traditional
dependence on corporate America for the rosy outlook. "As we transition
to a more international customer base that features less emphasis on the
U.S., as well as a structural shift towards larger and more
cost-effective aircraft, [we] are expected to continue to generate
strong interest across all markets," said Mairead Lavery, Bombardier
Aerospace vice-president of strategy and business development, in a
statement released last week. More... AERION
SALES SUPERSONIC Aerion says it's racking up orders for its
supersonic business jet at the rate of "a billion [dollars] every two
months. In an email to media in advance of next week's EBACE business
aviation show in Geneva, company spokesman Jeff Miller said the order
book for the $80 million jet is now at more than 40 and represents more
than $3 billion in advance orders since the company began taking orders
earlier this year. Although Aerion won't be having a formal news
conference at EBACE, all of its chief executives will be there and
available for questions from media and those who want to fly really
fast. More... BOMBARDIER
PICKS PW&C FOR LEAR 85 Bombardier has announced that its
composite Lear 85 will be powered by Pratt and Whitney Canada PW307B
engines. The PW307B puts out 6,100 lbs. of thrust. The engine is being
touted for its environmental performance as well. Lear GM David Coleal
said it offers low noise and emissions and is more efficient than
engines of comparable power. "Our new alliance builds on this success to
offer an aircraft and powerplant solution that will deliver exceptional
value for operators, featuring superior performance combined with
reduced emission levels and low noise," Coleal (former chief operating
officer of Cirrus Design) said. More... |

FAA
SHOWDOWN WITH SANTA MONICA We've reported periodically on the
battle between Santa Monica City Council and the FAA on the ongoing
tussle over the city's plans to ban Class C and D jets (approach speed
of more than 120 knots) from using the ultra-convenient reliever
facility near the heart of Los Angeles. The FAA has obtained a temporary
injunction and the full court hearing is Thursday. California's first
family has even been drawn into the scrap. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's
GIV would be banned, extending the governator's almost daily commute
from his Brentwood home to the airport by longer than it takes to fly
the trip. It's interesting to note that his brother-in-law Bobby
Schriver is on Santa Monica council and is backing the ban. But while
celebrities tend to grab the limelight in this issue, well-known
aviation writer and speaker Barry Schiff, who's also chairman of the
Santa Monica Airport Association, told AVweb in a podcast
interview that there are a lot of issues for regular pilots and
owners, too. More... BARRY
SCHIFF, DEFENDER OF THE BELEAGUERED SANTA MONICA
AIRPORT Chances are, you've read one of Barry Schiff's
books or heard him speak about his lifelong affair with the air, but the
accomplished pilot and aviation advocate is also a staunch defender of
one of the nation's most threatened airports as chairman of the board of
the Santa Monica Airport Association. AVweb's Russ Niles spoke
with Schiff about the current issues surrounding access by larger
business jets and why that's just part of a greater threat to the
facility. More... |
