 Diamond Aircraft will be exhibiting the new AE 300 Austro engine next week at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. The Austro is a
jet-A-burning,
170hp, next-generation turbo-diesel engine that soon will be available on the DA42 Diamond twin. The AE 300 offers 26 percent more power than the engines currently on the DA42, says Diamond, for better take-off and climb performance, better single-engine performance and more speed. Diamond has been
working with MB Tech (a Mercedes Benz daughter company) and Bosch to develop the engine, and they expect European certification within a few months. The "next-generation" features include a
clutch-less gear box, a cast-iron crankcase, integral oil/coolant heat exchanger and improved turbocharger air induction and cooling systems.
Diamond has been working hard to get the engine certified and online since their regular diesel supplier, Thielert
Aircraft Engines, ran into delivery issues recently. The company will also have a flying prototype of its D-Jet on static display, along with its full-scale D-Jet mock-up.

As the waiting lists for new business aircraft grow, innovation is taking hold in the used market, creating updated versions of proven designs via the Supplementary Type Certificate process. Among
the leaders in this movement is Clifford Development, which recently announced the first flight of a Citation 550 with Williams FJ44-3A engines. The aircraft took off from Kalamazoo/Battle Creek
International Airport on July 18 for its first flight and everything went well, according to the company. The conversion costs $2.275 million but the projected performance improvements are
significant.
According to the math from NASA, the re-engined Citation should climb directly to FL430 in 27 minutes instead of the step climb that took an hour and 47 minutes with the old engines. The company is
also projecting a 20 percent boost in fuel economy. "From the start, Citation S550 operators worldwide have been very interested in our program because of our forecasted 40 percent NBAA range
increase," said CEO Jim Clifford." Currently, rising fuel costs have made our re-engining programs increasingly important to operators."

So far, most of the emphasis on biofuels and synthetic jet fuels has been on the heavy hitters, airlines and military. Pratt and Whitney Canada, whose engines power a big percentage of the small jets
and turboprops in service, is evaluating the use of "second generation" biofuels that don't compete with food production. The most promising of these, to date, are jatropha, a succulent plant that
will grow in the poorest, driest soil in the harshest climates and deliver about 10 times as much fuel as irrigated, fertilized and pesticide-intensive corn (about 800 liters per acre) as well as
algae from the sea. "Already a leader in green technologies for small aviation engines, we aim to have a fuel-flexible engine and to develop technologies that will allow us to offer aircraft
manufacturers innovative and green power solutions," said Walter Di Bartolomeo, vice president - Engineering, P&WC."
PW&C is the leading partner in a project joingly funded with the Canadian government's International Science and Technology Patnerships Program. Two Indian oil companies are also involves as are
McGill University, Laval University, Ryerson Polytechnic, the National Research Council of Canada and Indian Institute of Technology.

It's been a long time since Cessna built any gas-burning twins but there are plenty still in service and now they can have panels that rival the latest offerings. Avidyne and Southern Star Avionics,
of Mobile, Ala., have added Cessna 320, 335 and 340 piston twins to their approved model list for the Envision Integrated Flight Deck. "Adding functionality and glass displays to these Cessna
piston-engine twins not only extends their useful lives, it means that more than 1,500 additional airplanes can now be equipped to operate in today's air traffic environment...," said Rod Higby,
Avidyne's vice president of sales and marketing.
Avidyne and Southern Star have collaborated on STCs for Envision on a variety of aircraft including Cirrus SR20 and SR22s with EXP5000 PFDs and an EXP5000 PFD and single EX5000 MFD retrofit, with
an S-Tec 65 autopilot on a King Air E90.

Vandals spray painted, slashed tires and smashed instruments on and otherwise tampered with at least 11 aircraft, including a Citation 550, in a spree that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars
worth of damage at Monmouth Executive Airport, near Belmar, N.J. last week. It's speculated that the vandals used a vehicle to tear the tail and part of the wing off a twin-engine Piper. "It appears
that a motor vehicle, with a cable attached, may have been used to accomplish this damage," Wall Township Police Lt. John Gavin told the Coast Star.
In fact, the violently disassembled Piper may be beyond repair, according to a spokesman for First in Flight, the airport business that reported the devastation. The vandalism is currently being
investigated by the Wall Township Police Department. In addition, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, the FBI, and the FAA will also help in the investigation.
