Cessna Slows Citation Production, Citing Global Economy

Textron, the parent company of Cessna, announced on Tuesday that "due to continued softening in the global economic environment," it is revising its 2009 Citation jet production schedule. The company had previously targeted about 535 Citations for delivery in 2009, up from about 475 planned for 2008. The company said that while it is still working on a detailed plan, it expects deliveries will be up only slightly over 2008 next year, although the Mustang program will continue to grow. Overall, the company estimated 2009 Cessna revenues for next year will hold about the same as this year. "As we look out to the next two to three years, it is prudent for us to evaluate the proper level of jet production and deliveries to avoid significant variations and inefficiencies in annual production," said Textron CEO Lewis Campbell. "We now believe that planning for more consistent levels of production during the next several years will best serve our shareholders, customers and employees."

Cessna's expected revenues for 2008 are about $5.9 billion, a new record, Textron said.

Hawker Beechcraft To Cut 490 Jobs

As the aviation industry continues to feel the impact of a reeling global economy, Hawker Beechcraft told its employees this week that 490 jobs will be cut, reducing the company's global work force of over 9,700 by about 5 percent. "While these reductions are painful, they are absolutely necessary," Hawker Beechcraft CEO Jim Schuster said Monday in a letter to employees, according to the Wichita Eagle. The company is facing "serious challenges" due to "unprecedented worldwide economic decline," Schuster said. On Tuesday, the company said in a news release that it expects reduced demand for new aircraft, spares and maintenance services due to the "weakness in the global economy and overall economic outlook." The company's performance this year also was impacted by a four-week strike in August by the by the International Association of Machinists, which resulted in fewer deliveries of business and general aviation aircraft.

During that quarter, the company delivered 86 aircraft, compared to 106 during the same period in 2007. "This was a difficult quarter as the reduced aircraft deliveries impacted our financial results significantly," Schuster said.

Embraer Considering A Larger Jet

Embraer, of Brazil, may develop a larger jet with seats for over 120 passengers, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The airplane would target a niche between the regional jets that Embraer builds now and commercial airliners like those built by Boeing and Airbus. "Whether we should develop a larger plane, alone or with partners, is something that we will have to decide," Antonio Luiz Pizarro Manso, Embraer's chief financial officer, said on a conference call, according to Reuters. "Right now, we think the market is well supplied by the existing models, the (Boeing) 737 and the (Airbus) A320," he said. "So our strategy is to wait a bit, especially to see what kind of engine can be developed for such a project." Pizarro Manso also said he would be open to partnering with Airbus to develop a new airplane, but added that "there is nothing specific at the moment."

Embraer also this week released its first market outlook dedicated to the Chinese market, at Airshow China 2008, in the city of Zhuhai. The market outlook presents Embraer's vision of the future development trends of the regional segment. In line with the expansion of China's aviation market, Embraer forecasts a total demand of 875 new regional aircraft over the next 20 years, consisting of 120 for 30 to 60 seats, 295 for 61 to 90 seats, and 460 for 91 to 120 seats.

China RJs Win First Overseas Buyer

The first regional jet built in China, the ARJ21, won its first overseas customer this week. General Electric's aircraft leasing division signed up to buy five of the airplanes, with options for 20 more, at the Zhuhai air show on Tuesday. GE, which is the world's largest builder of aircraft engines, provides the CF34 engines that power the Chinese jets. Dan Whitney, a GE spokesman, said the purchase "demonstrates our ability and commitment to continue to invest in emerging markets where we see solid growth potential." Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), based in Shanghai, has now taken orders for 206 of the regional jets, which sell for about $30 million each. The ARJ21, which seats 70 to 90 passengers, is on track to begin flight tests later this year.

COMAC is developing the aircraft for both Chinese and export markets. There are currently 50 new airports scheduled for construction within China over the next five years, and traffic in the country is expected to grow 12 percent annually over the next 20 years. Aircraft deliveries to GE will begin in 2013.

Crownair Brings Updated T210 To Market

Crownair Companies will display its first Crownair "Centurion Edition" T210 during the AOPA Expo in San Jose, Calif., this week. The upgraded 1977 aircraft features all-new amenities, including a glass cockpit, new classic blue paint scheme, RAM engine, tinted glass, wingtips with recognition lights, Super Quiet cabin soundproofing and gray leather seats with sheepskin inserts. The T210 will compete with new aircraft, offering more payload and faster speeds, Crownair says. The Centurion was in production from 1957 to 1985 and about 9,240 were built. "Centurion owners and pilots own a piece of history, but that doesn't mean the plane shouldn't have modern technology and comforts," said Grant Murray, owner of Crownair. "We understand the dedicated owners and enthusiasts who fly Centurions, and our goal is to make their flying experience first class."

Production on the Crownair Centurion Edition T210 will be done on an as-ordered basis and takes approximately two to three months, the company said. Crownair is based in southern California.

Soloy Receives FAA Certification For Turbine Cessna 206

Soloy Aviation Solutions, of Olympia, Wash., received FAA certification on Oct. 28 for its Soloy 206 Turbine Mk II, a turbine version of the piston-powered Cessna 206H. Powered by the Rolls Royce 250-B17F/2 turbine engine, the Mk II provides an increase of 110 hp over the standard Cessna 206H, Soloy said this week. With the turbine conversion paired with a Hartzell three-bladed prop, the airplane can carry more weight, fly faster and operate in high and hot conditions. The performance also improves the airplane's STOL performance, especially in its amphibious configuration, Soloy said. "The Mk II is the perfect platform for vast number of applications, from law enforcement to adventurous backcountry operations," said Dave Stauffer, president of Soloy Aviation Solutions. "The lighter turbine engine increases the power while reducing the basic empty weight by approximately 150 pounds."

The aircraft can climb at 2,460 fpm at sea level, cruise at 20,000 feet at 213 ktas, carry 775 pounds with full fuel, and has a range of about 550 nm, the company said. The Mk II is initially offered in four configurations, for law enforcement, skydiving, amphibious flight and commercial/private operations. Soloy has started accepting orders and plans to deliver the first aircraft later this month. The aircraft will be on display this week at the AOPA Expo in San Jose, Calif.
