The FAA has extended an exemption that allows operators of certain small aircraft to be reimbursed for expenses, NBAA said last week. Operators must be NBAA members to qualify for the exemption,
which allows for cost sharing in situations such as transporting a guest on a company aircraft or the use of an aircraft by employees of a subsidiary company. The exemption applies to Part 91
operators of piston airplanes, small airplanes, and all helicopters. The extension expires on March 31.
"The FAA will be reviewing the Small Aircraft Extension to clarify some elements of the additional maintenance flexibility granted under the provisions of the exemption," said Doug Carr, NBAA's
vice president for safety, security, operations and regulation. "NBAA does not expect that the FAA's review will ultimately alter the provisions of the exemption in a way that would affect any members
that currently qualify for and utilize the exemption."

Boeing said this week it has sold 60 aircraft to Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes, a Brazilian airline, comprising the largest order ever from a single airline in South America. All 60 of the
airplanes will be the 737 Max model, at a value of about $6 billion at list price. The 737 Max has new engines from CFM International and new winglets. Boeing said the design will deliver better fuel
efficiency and fewer carbon emissions than earlier models. This order puts the 737 Max at 724 firm orders to date. Deliveries are expected to start in 2017.
"Boeing has partnered with Gol since their inception just over 12 years ago," said Ray Conner, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We've watched them grow from a small start-up
airline to a driving force in global aviation and we are proud to partner with them as the South American launch customer for the 737 Max." Gol is currently cutting jobs by about 12 percent, or 2,500
positions, according to the BBC, as the low-cost carrier seeks to become profitable again. Passenger growth has been strong in
Brazil, the BBC said, but Gol has suffered from high fuel prices and competition from larger airlines.

Honda Aircraft Co. is working to expand its facilities in Greensboro, N.C., the company said last week, starting construction of a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility to service the coming
fleet of HondaJets. The 90,000-square-foot $20-million building will support up to 12 aircraft at a time, and also has space for workshops, a pilot's lounge, conference rooms, a flight-planning area,
and spare-parts storage. The facility will operate seven days a week, around the clock, Honda said, and will be ready for occupancy by the second half of next year, in advance of first deliveries.
"It is my commitment to build the best maintenance, repair and overhaul facility to serve the HondaJet customer," said Honda Aircraft CEO Michimasa Fujino.
According to HondaJet, the new airplane will be "the fastest, highest-flying, most quiet and most fuel efficient in its class." The jet is powered by two GE Honda HF120 turbofan jet engines, and is
equipped with customized Garmin G3000 avionics. The HondaJet is Honda's first commercial aircraft. Earlier this year, Fujino said the
company was going after 25 percent of the worldwide light jet market. "I'm very optimistic about our prospects," Fujino said. "We're doing with HondaJet what the Civic did to American cars from the
1960s. Our competitors are still producing with technology from the 1990s." The jet will cost about 30 percent less to operate than competitors, Fujino said.

AOPA Summit is coming up Oct. 11-13 in Palm Springs, Calif., and lots of opportunities will be offered for pilots to brush up on their skills. The IMC Club will host an instrument proficiency
forum on Thursday the 11th, from 10:30 a.m. till noon. Pilots are invited to participate in the decision-making process through an organized discussion of real-life instrument-flying experiences. "We
intend to be present with this 'Open Chapter' format at most general aviation events nationwide, to allow pilots who don't have chapters in their communities yet to sample what the IMC Club is all about," said IMC Club President Radek Wyrzykowski. Instructors from SAFE, the Society of Aviation
and Flight Educators, also will be at the show with their Pilot Proficiency Project, offering training sessions in a Redbird FMX full-motion simulator.
The SAFE instructors have modified the project since its debut at EAA AirVenture, based on
pilot feedback -- each one-hour session will comprise a 15-minute pre-briefing, 30 minutes in the simulator, and a 15-minute debriefing; scenarios in the simulator can be flown with either a legacy
panel (i.e., "steam gauges") or a G1000 panel; and pilots can choose which two of the 11 SAFE scenarios they'd like to fly. Training sessions will be offered Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Pilots are
urged to sign up early on the day of the session to reserve a slot. AVweb staff will be in Palm Springs to bring you news stories, podcasts and video from the event.

Helicopters searched across rugged terrain in northwest Brisbane, Australia, for a 1934 de Havilland Dragon DH-84 biplane that went missing Monday afternoon (local time) with six people on board.
The pilot was headed home after a weekend airshow when a distress call was received about 2:15 p.m., and an emergency locator signal was heard about 45 minutes later. The pilot reportedly was
"struggling in thick cloud," according to a report from the Australian Broadcasting
Network. Low-lying clouds in the hilly and forested area hampered search efforts. Officials said an aircraft equipped with infrared technology would search overnight, and further air and ground
efforts would ramp up in the morning.
Desmond Porter, 68, the pilot and owner of the aircraft, was giving scenic flights at the airshow to raise money for charity, according to The Australian. Porter's partner and two
elderly couples were believed to be on board. Porter had survived the crash of a Dragon in 1954 that killed his father and 13-year-old brother. The missing de Havilland, which was rebuilt about eight
years ago, is believed to be one of only four in the world.

The B-24 was the most widely produced bomber in world history. This video shows the sole surviving regularly flown example, from roughly 18,000 B-24 Liberator bombers produced.
This is the Collings Foundation's B-24, Witchcraft.
During World War II, at peak production, factories put out roughly ten of these aircraft per day. Each was driven by four supercharged turbocharged radials putting out 1,200
horsepower each. Flying with greater range than the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator bomber could drop about 8,000 pounds of bombs from high- or low-altitude attacks. When WWII's most widely
used big bomber went down, it often took all ten crewmen at a time. It was notably involved in the infamous Ploesti raid, in which more than 50 aircraft and 660 crewmen were lost. The surviving men
who flew in the bomber and the men and women who produced these historic aircraft are becoming few. Talk to one if you get the chance.
