When Good Engines Go Bad
Recently, a USAirways 767-200 came out of maintenance to replace a component, a job which requires a full-power run-up. During that run-up, the first stage turbine failed catastrophically, shedding fan blades and other engine parts. It was the first time this kind of failure has occurred with the twin GE CF6-80C engines on the 767, which is ETOPS-approved. If you ever wanted to see what's left after this kind of engine failure, AVweb has the images to demonstrate this is not something you'd want to have happen on your next hop across the pond.
